As of Aug 19, 2026, the average hourly pay for 15 years old in the United States is $35.40, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $23.32 and $42.07 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What jobs can a 15-year-old legally have?

At 15 years old, you can work in a variety of part-time jobs, such as babysitting, lawn mowing, retail, food service, or working at amusement parks, depending on local labor laws. The types of jobs and the number of hours you can work are often restricted to ensure your safety and do not interfere with school. Most states require parental consent and may require a work permit or certificate. Be sure to check your state or country's specific regulations and find out if your employer complies with youth labor laws.

What types of entry-level jobs are typically available to 15-year-olds, and what should I expect from my first work experience?

At 15, job opportunities are often limited to roles that comply with child labor laws, such as working at fast food restaurants, grocery stores, or local retail establishments. You can expect tasks like cashiering, stocking shelves, cleaning, or assisting customers. These jobs provide valuable experience in teamwork, punctuality, and customer service, and are usually part-time with flexible hours to accommodate school schedules. It's common to start with simpler responsibilities and gradually take on more as you gain experience and show reliability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a retail sales associate, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Retail Sales Associate, you need strong customer service skills, basic math abilities, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems and inventory management tools is typically required. Excellent communication, patience, and teamwork help you stand out in this customer-facing role. These skills ensure positive customer experiences, efficient operations, and a supportive workplace environment.
