What jobs can a 14-year-old legally do?

At 14 years old, you are allowed to work in certain jobs with restrictions due to child labor laws. Typical jobs for 14-year-olds include babysitting, dog walking, lawn mowing, grocery bagging, working at some fast food restaurants, or doing light office work. Federal law limits the number of hours and types of work you can do, and some states have additional rules. Always check local regulations and get a work permit if required before starting a job.

What types of part-time jobs are typically available for 14-year-olds, and what should I expect in terms of responsibilities and supervision?

At 14 years old, job options are generally limited to roles such as babysitting, pet sitting, lawn care, or working in certain retail or food service positions with restrictions on hours and duties. You can expect responsibilities like assisting customers, stocking shelves, or helping with basic tasks under close supervision. Employers are required to follow child labor laws, so your work schedule will likely be limited to after-school hours and weekends. Supervisors and coworkers are usually supportive and understand that this may be your first job, so training and guidance are often provided. These jobs are a great way to develop important skills and work habits while balancing school commitments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 14-year-old worker, and why are they important?

To succeed in entry-level jobs available to 14-year-olds, such as babysitting, retail, or food service, you need reliability, a strong work ethic, and basic communication skills, along with any required work permits. Familiarity with point-of-sale systems, basic computer skills, and workplace safety guidelines is often helpful. Standout soft skills include responsibility, punctuality, and a willingness to learn from feedback. These qualities are important because they build trust with employers, ensure a safe work environment, and lay the foundation for future professional growth.
