Job description

PURPOSE OF THE JOB: The Medical Technologist is responsible for specimen processing, test performance, and test result reporting in a highly complex Laboratory, as defined by CLIA-88.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Meets the minimum qualifications of testing personnel in a highly complex Laboratory, as defined in 493.1489 of the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA).
  2. Professional registry as a Medical Technologist by the American Society of Pathology (ASCP), National Certification Agency (NCA), American Society of Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS), American Medical Technologists (AMT), or Federal government (HEW).
  3. Two or more years of professional registry as a Medical Laboratory Technician by the American Society of Pathology (ASCP), National Certification Agency (NCA), American Society of Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS), American Medical Technologists (AMT), or Federal government (HEW) and must be able to test and successfully pass the Medical Technologist certification exam within one (1) year of employment.
  4. Understands HIPAA/HITECH requirements and maintains complete patient confidentiality.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Follow the testing personnel responsibility standard as defined in 493.1495 of CLIA-88
  2. Follow the Laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.
  3. Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
  4. Follow all of the Laboratory’s Quality Assurance procedures
  5. Perform and record all required instrument maintenance and calibration activities.
  6. Ability to identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results.
  7. Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span (infant/pediatric/adolescent/adult/geriatric).
  8. Assess data reflective of the patients’ status.
  9. Interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age specific needs
  10. Provide the care needed as described in Laboratory procedures.
  11. Disseminate test results to the appropriate individuals and departments.
  12. Phlebotomies (blood draws) from patients of all ages and physical conditions.
  13. Give patients and providers directions in collecting urine, sputum, stool, and other specimens for both male and female patients.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Laboratory employees may be exposed to patients with communicable diseases and process specimens that may contain infectious agents. The Laboratory handles and stores confidential patient information that must be protected by all Laboratory employees. Must be able to see, hear, speak, walk, sit, bend, kneel, and lift and carry up to 25 pounds with or without accommodation.

POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK: This is a full-time position, and hours of work are on a rotating schedule. On-Call and Call-Back are required. Attendance in accordance with the BBAHC Attendance policy is a job requirement.
