Job description

Department: Medical Clinic
Title: Hepatitis-C Outreach Medical Assistant – W. Broad Street clinic
Description: The Hepatitis C Outreach Medical Assistant (MA) assists providers in
implementing patient care and delivers patient-centered, culturally competent services within
Central Outreach Wellness Center’s Hepatitis C Outreach Program. This role supports efficient
clinic flow, rapid testing, treatments, and procedures related to Hepatitis C, HIV, STIs, PrEP, and
harm reduction services. The MA serves as one of the first points of patient contact and plays a
critical role in creating a welcoming, safe, and affirming clinical environment.
The MA works collaboratively with Health Care Provider, Case Manager, Pharmacy
Coordinators, Administrative Staff and affiliate pharmacies in a fast-paced, community-focused
outpatient clinic.

Program Overview:


The Hepatitis-C Outreach Program at the W. Broad Street clinic provides comprehensive
infectious disease services, including:

  • Rapid Hepatitis-C testing and treatment initiation.
  • HIV testing and rapid ART initiation.
  • PrEP initiation and short-term continuation.
  • Comprehensive STI testing and same-day treatment.
  • Harm reduction services and overdose prevention.
  • Linkage to ongoing care and external referral partners.

The Medical Assistant support same-day testing and treatment workflows and contributes to
COWC’s mission to reduce barriers to care for underserved and high-risk populations.

General Duties and Responsibilities:
Room patients according to the standard workflow, including Chief Complaint, Vital
Signs, Quick Questions (Visit Program Area), SOGI, Allergies, and comprehensive
medical, surgical, family, and social history.

Provide a rooming report to the provider, ensuring all pertinent information is relayed
accurately.
Assist providers in maintaining efficient clinic flow.
Review patient intake forms to assess clinical needs and determine testing eligibility.
Identify and report any vitals out of range promptly to the appropriate clinical team
member.
Complete PrEP risk assessments and scoring tools.
Provide basic patient education related to PrEP and testing workflows.
Maintain accurate, timely documentation in the Electronic Medical Record. (EMR)
Obtain and document vital signs, including height, weight, blood pressure, respiratory
rate, and pain level.
Initiate rapid Hepatitis-C testing for patients with no known history of HCV.
Initiate rapid HIV testing for patients with no known history of HIV.
Perform rapid testing as part of rooming workflows when appropriate.
Communicate test readiness and results status to providers.
Obtain labs as ordered and properly label specimens using patient first initial last name,
and date of birth.
Collect specimens including urine, throat swabs, and rectal swabs as ordered.
Perform venipuncture and blood draws, including assistant with difficult access when
trained.
Administer vaccines under provider guidance and properly document in the EMR.
Administer medications as ordered and document dosage, concentration, route, and site
accurately.
Assist with STI testing and treatment workflows.
Properly log patient information.
Assist providers with medical task as requested within MA scope.
Disinfect exam rooms between patient visits.
Stock exam rooms and bathrooms with appropriate supplies.
Properly dispose of sharps and biohazardous materials and maintain a safe clinical
environment.
Support same-day treatment workflows for Hepatitis-C, HIV, and STI’s.
Assist with harm reduction services, including Narcan education and distribution.
Collaborate with case managers, pharmacy coordinators, and administrative staff to
support patient care and follow-up.
Complete the MA disposition note to document lab work and completed orders.
Adhere to CCMA protocols for COWC, maintaining compliance with required training
and certifications.

Qualifications:


Certified or Registered Medical Assistant (CMA/RMA) or equivalent experience.
Achieving official CCMA Certification is a requirement of all COWC medical assistants by the
time they reach 12 months of employment.
Experience with phlebotomy and vaccine administration.
Remain culturally humble while working, including being gender sensitive and pronoun
aware.
Be able to work with a team of medical assistants, providers, and administrative staff.

Knowledge of basic computer skills, Excel, Word and how to use Electronic Medical
Records
Patient-centered and nonjudgmental approach to care
Punctuality and impeccable attendance
Strong communication skills with both professionals and patients from all demographics
Non-judgmental approach to patient care
Technical skills with required office equipment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with Hepatitis-C, HIV, STI’s, PrEP, and/or harm reduction services.
  • Experience working with underserved and/or high-risk populations.
  • Familiarity with rapid testing protocols and same-day treatment models.
