Job description

Job Title

Senior Director – Research Security (ERIK | Administration)

Position Overview

The Senior Director of the Office of Secure Research leads and manages the Office, overseeing the university’s compliance with export control and national security‑related regulations, including ITAR, EAR, OFAC sanctions and the National Industry Security Program.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage the Office of Secure Research, ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations.
  • Develop, implement and monitor institutional response plans for export control and national security concerns.
  • Coordinate with the Office of Sponsored Programs, Office of Research Compliance, Office of Academic Affairs, Office of Legal Affairs and other stakeholders to enforce compliance and mitigate foreign influence.
  • Provide national engagement and keep up to date with pending and proposed regulations, policies and guidance documents.
  • Coordinate communications with federal regulatory and law enforcement agencies to strengthen relationships and facilitate interactions.
  • Oversee educational offerings regarding research objectives, foreign influence and related matters.
  • Direct risk assessment processes for international research engagements and export controls.
  • Report to the Associate Vice President for Research Integrity and Investigations and provide strategic planning for compliance policies and procedures.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 12 years’ experience leading and performing secure research operations to align with institutional, state and federal compliance requirements.
  • 5 years’ experience in export controls.
  • 5 years’ leadership experience supervising and developing staff.
  • 3 years’ experience successfully leading compliance initiatives related to secure classified research.
  • 10 years’ experience working with sponsored research and compliance issues in higher education.
  • Ability to lead projects requiring integration of efforts across many internal and external entities.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent leadership, organizational and problem‑solving skills; ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Ability to promote, support and foster a culture of integrity, engagement and collaboration.
Desired Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in a relevant research‑related field.
  • Current security clearance at the Collateral Secret level, within a year of obtaining one, or eligibility to hold one.
  • 5 years of demonstrated ability to exercise authority through influencing others and building strong relationships.
  • 5 years of demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities, operate in ambiguity and communicate to a complex set of audiences.
  • Ability to provide strategic leadership to the organization.
  • 3 years of interaction with appropriate federal regulatory and law enforcement agencies.

Salary

Salary range: $140,000 – $183,000, based on internal equity, qualifications and budget.

Work Location

Mount Hall (0311). Hybrid work arrangements considered, with a minimum of 2 days in office per week.

Security Clearance & Eligibility
  • U.S. citizen or national; permanent resident; asylee or refugee; or protected individual per Title8U.S.Code §1324(b)(3)(b).
  • Current security clearance at Collateral Secret level, within a year of obtaining one, or eligible to hold one.
