Job description

Description
Summary
The Vice Dean for Research (VDR) provides strategic leadership and primary responsibility for shaping the vision for continued growth of the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing's (JHSON) research portfolio and scholarly activities. Reporting directly to the Dean, the VDR leads the development and evaluation of research and scholarly activities at the school, working closely with the Nursing Office of Research Administration (NORA), the finance team, and the HR team. As a key member of the school's senior leadership team, the VDR works closely with other school leaders to provide coordinated leadership and to integrate research and scholarship within JHSON, thereby facilitating faculty and student research. The VDR leads collaborative efforts with research leaders across JHU, including the JHU Vice Provost for Research. The VDR provides leadership to further advance the national and global reputation of the JHSON research community's contributions to nursing and health care.
The Opportunity
This is a unique opportunity for a visionary leader in nursing and interdisciplinary science to join one of the world's premier nursing schools. The Vice Dean will shape and execute a strategy that maintains JHSON's externally funded research, amplifies its policy and practice influence, and prepares faculty and trainees to compete and lead in a rapidly evolving ecosystem. The successful candidate will mobilize JHSON's strengths-community partnerships, methodological excellence, and clinical and population health impact-while forging new alliances across JHU, health systems, industry, philanthropy, and global partners. This position offers the chance to join an exceptional leadership team and world-class researchers committed to advancing health globally.
The Team
The Vice Dean is responsible for developing and implementing vision and strategies to support faculty research productivity, pre-award and post-award management, and faculty mentorship and development.
The VDR works closely with the Associate Dean for Finance and Administration and the Nursing Office of Research Administration (NORA) team to support and oversee grants management. The VDR works with the Associate Dean for Research, the Biostatistics and Methods faculty core, and all research faculty to grow and support JHSON's research enterprise. JHSON has approximately 45 research-track faculty and annual research expenditures exceeding $25M.
Why Join Us
• Shape the future of nursing science at scale. Lead the strategy to grow and diversify a premier school's research enterprise-driving federal and non-federal awards, center-level initiatives, and cross-campus collaborations that set national standards.
• Be at the forefront of a rapidly evolving funding landscape. Position JHSON to succeed in emerging priority areas and mechanisms.
• Champion the next generation of scholars.
• Collaborate with world-class teams. Work alongside renowned faculty, the Biostatistics and Methods core, and university research leaders-including the Vice Provost for Research-to catalyze interdisciplinary science across Medicine, Public Health, Engineering, and beyond.
• Drive practice and policy change. Forge partnerships with health systems, payers, community organizations, and philanthropies to create implementation-ready research that measurably improves outcomes and informs policy.
• Lead with purpose in a mission-driven institution. Join a school committed to health equity, innovation, and open science-where your leadership will enhance the visibility and influence of nursing in the broader health innovation ecosystem.
Major Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership and Alignment
• Work collaboratively with other JHSON leaders to promote the vision, mission, values, and strategic goals of the JHSON and JHU; provide strategic leadership, including determining structures to foster programs of research that leverage collective expertise
• Recommend policies, procedures, and practices that complement and strengthen JHSON's strategic direction and advance research

• Identify new partnerships with government, industry, healthcare organizations, non-profits, philanthropy, and other communities to provide resources and establish new collaborations
• Advance JHSON's global vision for research partnerships through collaboration with the Associate Deans for Global and Community Affairs to increase global and community-based research portfolios
Research Integrity, Culture, and Communications
• Promote research responsibility and ensure faculty and trainees are aware of scholarly integrity and research ethics
• Promote a research environment that fosters inclusive dialogue, trust, and respect among faculty, staff, students, and stakeholders
• Work with communications and marketing specialists to communicate relevant information to internal and external communities
Faculty Development, Mentoring, and Capacity Building
• Mentor faculty on research and grantsmanship; collaborate with the Associate Dean for Faculty Development to build capacity and mentoring to achieve research excellence and expand JHSON's scientific impact
• Assist and advise researchers to maximize external research funding through development
programs, internal peer review, nurturing scholarship, and mentoring processes; promote scholarly and research productivity and interdisciplinary collaboration
• Provide oversight of JHSON internal pilot grant program to support incremental advancement of faculty programs of research
Funding Strategy and Portfolio Growth
• Promote diversification of JHSON's research funding portfolio to reflect increased funding from varied sources

About Johns Hopkins University

Sourced by ZipRecruiter

Gilman believed that teaching and research go hand in hand—that success in one depends on success in the other—and that a modern university must do both well. He also believed that sharing our knowledge and discoveries would help make the world a better place. In 145 years, we haven’t strayed from that vision. This is still a destination for excellent, ambitious scholars and a world leader in teaching and research. Distinguished professors mentor students in the arts and music, humanities, social and natural sciences, engineering, international studies, education, business, and the health professions. Those same faculty members, along with their colleagues at the university’s Applied Physics Laboratory, have made us the nation’s leader in federal research and development funding every year since 1979. That’s a fitting distinction for America’s first research university, a place that has revolutionized higher education in the U.S. and continues to bring knowledge and discoveries to the world.
