The Ohio State University College of Dentistry is seeking a Post Doctoral Scholar to join an interdisciplinary research program focused on the development, validation, and clinical translation of digital technologies for surgical monitoring, navigation, and precision healthcare. The successful candidate will play a leading role in designing, developing, and executing research projects involving three-dimensional imaging, intraoral scanning, digital metrology, computational analysis, surgical guidance systems, and related biomedical technologies.
This position requires a highly motivated researcher capable of independently leading projects while collaborating with faculty, clinicians, engineers, and trainees across multiple colleges and divisions. The Postdoctoral Scholar will contribute to all phases of the research lifecycle, from concept development and proposal preparation to data collection, analysis, publication, and dissemination.
Research Design and Project Development
  • Design, develop, and implement innovative research projects related to digital surgery, image-guided interventions, biomedical imaging, and clinical innovation.
  • Identify, fabricate, modify, and/or obtain research specimens, devices, models, and materials necessary for project execution.
  • Develop detailed research protocols, standard operating procedures, and quality assurance processes.
  • Contribute to the conception and preparation of new research initiatives and multidisciplinary collaborations.
  • Participate in strategic planning of short- and long-term research objectives.

Project Execution and Scientific Oversight
  • Conduct and/or supervise experimental, laboratory, preclinical, and clinical research activities.
  • Ensure data collection procedures meet institutional, regulatory, and scientific quality standards.
  • Monitor project progress, timelines, milestones, and deliverables.
  • Oversee research personnel involved in project execution, including undergraduate, graduate, and professional students.
  • Maintain accurate research records and ensure compliance with institutional policies and ethical standards.

Data Analysis and Interpretation
  • Perform advanced quantitative and qualitative analyses of research data.
  • Develop methodologies for three-dimensional image analysis, digital alignment, trajectory assessment, and computational modeling as appropriate.
  • Interpret findings and formulate scientifically rigorous conclusions.
  • Collaborate with statisticians, engineers, and other specialists to support data analysis and validation.

Scientific Communication and Dissemination
  • Prepare scientific reports for sponsors, collaborators, and funding agencies.
  • Lead the preparation, writing, submission, and revision of manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals.
  • Prepare and submit abstracts for national and international scientific meetings.
  • Present research findings at conferences, seminars, workshops, and stakeholder meetings.
  • Contribute to the development of educational materials and training resources.

Grant and Proposal Development
  • Assist in the preparation of competitive research proposals and grant applications.
  • Contribute preliminary data, research plans, budgets, and supporting documentation for funding submissions.
  • Identify funding opportunities from federal agencies, foundations, industry partners, and professional organizations.
  • Participate in the development of multidisciplinary research programs and center-level initiatives.

Mentorship and Education
  • Mentor and supervise undergraduate students, graduate students, residents, and visiting sholars.
  • Provide guidance on experimental design, data collection, statistical analysis, scientific writing, and professional development.
  • Support educational and training activities related to digital technologies, surgical innovation, and translational research.
  • Foster an inclusive and collaborative research environment.

Multidisciplinary Collaboration
  • Collaborate effectively with faculty, clinicians, researchers, and trainees across colleges, departments, and research centers.
  • Facilitate interdisciplinary projects involving Dentistry, Medicine, Engineering, Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, Materials Science, and related fields.
  • Engage with external collaborators, industry partners, and research sponsors when appropriate.
  • Support translational activities that advance research discoveries toward clinical implementation.

Innovation and Technology Translation
  • Contribute to the development, validation, and optimization of emerging technologies and digital workflows.
  • Assist in intellectual property disclosures, patent development, and commercialization activities as appropriate.
  • Evaluate opportunities for technology transfer and clinical translation.
  • Support the adoption of innovative methodologies that improve patient safety, precision, and healthcare outcomes.

Physical Requirements:
A post-doctoral scholar must be able to use both hands, dexterity in the fingers and the ability to manipulate instruments, materials, and operate equipment. The body must be able to stop and reach in order to conduct lab procedures. The ability to sit and stand for a duration of time is also necessary. Other specific requirements include color spectrum differentiation; manual dexterity/ motor coordination, hand-eye coordination, physical communications; visual activity and communication/language development. Individuals is this position may be exposed to the follow: animals; bloodborne pathogens; chemical hazards (skin irritants); vibrating equipment; use of sharp instruments; and latex.
