Job description

We are partnering with our client, a growing commercial moving and warehousing company based in Columbus, OH, looking to add a Controller to their growing team. This is a unique opportunity for an experienced accounting leader to build and lead the company's finance function while serving as a key member of the Leadership Team.

The Controller will own the accounting function end-to-end, oversee financial reporting, budgeting, billing, and internal controls, and help modernize the company's financial systems and processes. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys building scalable processes, driving operational improvements, and partnering with leadership to influence business performance.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Accounting & Financial Leadership

  • Own the monthly close process and deliver accurate financial reporting by the 5th business day, including P&L, balance sheet, cash flow, and margin reporting by line of business.
  • Lead the accounting, billing, accounts receivable, and finance administration functions while supervising the Billing Specialist and future part-time AR resource.
  • Design and implement a new chart of accounts and establish standardized accounting processes, reconciliations, and financial controls.
  • Convert the company's accounting from cash basis to accrual basis, including deferred revenue, accruals, prepaids, and depreciation.
  • Strengthen internal controls, particularly surrounding cash receipts and deposits.

Process Improvement & Technology

  • Redesign the billing-to-cash process by implementing structured job-site billing capture and recurring storage invoicing to improve cash flow and reduce manual work.
  • Own the accounting technology roadmap by evaluating QuickBooks Desktop and future accounting platforms while implementing AP automation, expense management, electronic payments, and system integrations.
  • Establish KPI reporting and financial dashboards that provide leadership with meaningful operational insights.

Business Partnership

  • Lead the annual budgeting process and maintain the company's rolling 13-week cash forecast.
  • Partner with executive leadership to improve business performance through financial analysis and strategic recommendations.
  • Serve as a key member of the Leadership Team, helping shape financial strategy as the organization continues to grow and modernize.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including ownership of the monthly close process.
  • Demonstrated success building or transforming accounting functions, including chart of accounts redesign, systems implementations, process improvements, or internal controls.
  • Experience with cash-to-accrual accounting conversions.
  • Strong understanding of job costing or project/service-based costing.
  • Hands-on experience with QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise and advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Proven leadership experience with the ability to develop teams and establish scalable accounting processes.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to present financial information to non-financial stakeholders.
  • Ability to identify opportunities that improve business performance and influence organizational decision-making.
  • Ability to work on-site in Columbus, OH.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CPA or CMA designation.
  • Experience in moving, logistics, construction, or field service industries.
  • Experience leading accounting software migrations or implementing AP automation and expense management systems.
  • Previous experience serving on a leadership team within a growing organization.

Why Join?

  • Competitive compensation package.
  • Health, dental, vision, and life insurance.
  • 401(k) with company match.
  • Paid time off plus six paid holidays.
  • Opportunity to build a finance function from the ground up while working directly with executive leadership in a high-impact role.
