Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Senior Software Engineer with strong mainframe and batch automation expertise to support a large-scale legacy modernization and automation initiative. This role focuses on automating manual operational processes, enhancing batch workflows, and supporting Hogan mainframe applications within an enterprise environment.
Candidates with 5+ years of software engineering experience are ideal. Prior formal lead experience is not required; however, mentorship or guidance experience is expected for lead-level consideration.
Responsibilities
  • Analyze business and user requirements and translate them into technical design specifications.
  • Design, develop, test, and maintain mainframe applications using COBOL, JCL, and SQL.
  • Support and enhance batch processing and job scheduling, including automation initiatives.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve production issues, batch failures, and system defects.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (analysts, QA, operations) throughout the full SDLC.
  • Identify repetitive or manual processes and implement automation-first solutions that deliver measurable ROI.
  • Contribute to moderately complex engineering initiatives and large-scale transformation planning.
  • Provide knowledge sharing and mentorship to team members as appropriate.
Required Qualifications
  • 4+ years of software engineering experience (or equivalent through work, consulting, training, education, or military experience).
  • Strong hands-on experience with:
    • COBOL, JCL, SQL
    • Batch processing, job scheduling, and production support
    • Debugging and troubleshooting independently in a mainframe environment
  • Experience working on IBM z/OS systems and related tools such as:
    • TSO/ISPF, SDSF, File-AID, Abend-Aid
  • Database experience with DB2 and/or IMS
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work effectively in an enterprise, team-based environment
Preferred Qualifications
  • Extensive hands-on experience with Hogan mainframe applications, including:
    • Hogan CIS (Customer Information System)
    • Hogan Umbrella
    • Hogan Deposits
    • Hogan IDS or RPM
  • Experience with CA7 scheduler and batch automation (hands-on).
  • Knowledge of REXX, SORT utilities, Easytrieve, Endevor.
  • Experience with VSAM and IMS DB/DC.
  • Automation-first mindset with demonstrated success automating batch or operational workflows.
  • Prior mentoring, coaching, or informal technical leadership experience.
  • IT project management experience (nice to have).

This role supports a major transformation initiative focused on modernizing and automating legacy mainframe technology. The engineer will partner closely with core technology teams to convert manual processes into scalable, automated solutions while maintaining stability of critical systems.
