Mars Petcare- Retort Sr. Operator- Columbus, OH

Shift Schedule:
  • Shift: 3rd (nights)
  • Schedule: 2.2.3
  • Hours: 7pm- 7:30am (flexible pending business needs)

Description of Role:
The Retort Sr. Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of retort (pressure sterilization) systems used in the thermal processing of pet food products. This role ensures retort cycles meet strict quality, food safety, and regulatory standards to deliver safe, shelf-stable pet food products.
What are we looking for?
Minimum Requirements:
  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent education
  • Previous experience in manufacturing
  • Proficient knowledge in computer software including MS Office and email.

Physical Requirements:
  • Can perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Frequent lifting/carrying (10-50 lbs) and pushing/pulling (50-300 lbs)
  • Frequent bending, stooping, twisting, handling, and gripping.
  • Ability to work at elevated heights, climb stairs, lean over equipment, and operate in confined spaces.
  • Ability to stand and work on feet for extended periods, with shifts lasting 12 hours
  • Capable of working in hot, cold and wet conditions
  • Proficient in understanding, communicating, reading, and writing in English.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Technical degree or certification(s)
  • Technical training in food processing or mechanical operations
  • Previous experience in thermal processing or retort operations (and/or certifications)
  • Experience with data logging systems
  • HACCP training certificate

What will be my Key Responsibilities?
  • Operate, monitor, and maintain retort systems, including loading/unloading retort baskets, setting cycle parameters, and initiating sterilization processes.
  • Verify proper product sealing, can integrity, and batch documentation prior to retort processing.
  • Monitor temperature, pressure, and time parameters throughout the retort cycle to ensure compliance with scheduled processes.
  • Record operational data (e.g., come-up time, process time, F0 values) accurately on batch records and data loggers.
  • Conduct routine equipment inspections and perform basic troubleshooting; escalate mechanical issues to maintenance personnel as needed.
  • Follow critical control point (CCP) procedures within the HACCP plan and support food safety initiatives.
  • Support sanitation teams by preparing retort equipment for cleaning and verifying cleanliness post-sanitation.
  • Adhere to all safety procedures, including lockout/tagout (LOTO), confined space entry, and PPE requirements.
  • Participate in line start-ups, changeovers, and shutdowns as required.
  • Collaborate with Quality Assurance, Maintenance, and Production teams to ensure seamless operations.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in compliance with OSHA, FDA, and company standards.
