ClearPath Utility Solutions, LLC is a veteran-friendly underground utility construction company specializing in Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD), fiber optic installation, utility construction, vacuum excavation, and critical infrastructure services throughout Ohio and surrounding regions. The ClearPath Utility Solutions HDD Operator Development Program is designed specifically for participants of the Defense-Oriented Workforce (DOW) SkillBridge Program, transitioning service members, and veterans seeking a rewarding career in the rapidly growing underground utility construction industry. This hands-on training opportunity provides participants with real-world experience working alongside experienced industry professionals on active construction projects that support the nation's communication, energy, and utility infrastructure.


Participants will receive structured, competency-based training in:

Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) Operations
Utility Locating & Damage Prevention
Equipment Inspection & Preventative Maintenance
Bore Planning & Print Reading
Drilling Fluid Systems & Mud Mixing
Locator Equipment & Bore Tracking
Vacuum Excavation & Utility Verification
Traffic Control & Work Zone Safety
Underground Utility Installation Practices
Leadership Development & Crew Coordination
Project Documentation & Quality Control


Through a combination of classroom instruction, mentorship, and hands-on field training, participants will develop the technical skills, safety awareness, mechanical aptitude, leadership abilities, and industry knowledge necessary to pursue a successful career as an HDD Operator or other utility construction professional.


Training takes place in real-world jobsite environments, allowing participants to gain valuable field experience while learning industry standards, best practices, and workforce expectations. Participants will work directly with experienced project managers, operators, safety professionals, and company leadership throughout the program.


Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Certificate of Program Completion and Internal Operator Qualification Verification documenting successful completion of the ClearPath Utility Solutions HDD Operator Development Program.

Job Description

The HDD Operator Development Program prepares participants to safely operate, maintain, and support directional drilling equipment used to install underground utilities. Participants will learn how to read bore plans, track drill paths, locate existing utilities, monitor drilling fluid systems, and assist with the installation of fiber optic, electric, communication, and utility infrastructure.


Participants will work closely with experienced operators, project managers, and safety personnel while developing the skills required to perform HDD operations in accordance with OSHA regulations, industry best practices, and company safety standards.


Successful participants will gain practical experience in equipment operation, utility construction methods, troubleshooting, jobsite communication, leadership development, and production-focused field operations.


Eligibility Factors

Participants must be approved for participation in the DOW SkillBridge Program

Possess a valid driver's license and maintain an acceptable driving record.

Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening and background check, if required.

Ability to safely perform physical job duties including lifting up to 50 pounds, walking on uneven terrain, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Ability to work in a team-oriented environment and follow verbal and written instructions.

Demonstrate a commitment to workplace safety and adherence to company policies and procedures.

Strong communication skills, positive attitude, and willingness to learn technical skills related to HDD operations and underground utility construction.

Prior experience in construction, equipment operation, military leadership, logistics, maintenance, engineering, utilities, transportation, or related fields is beneficial but not required.

Mechanical aptitude, problem-solving skills, adaptability, and a strong work ethic are highly encouraged.
