Job description

Job Title: 1st Shift Production Helper
Job Description

The 1st Shift Production Helper plays a key role in assembling and preparing industrial metal products for shipment in a high-volume manufacturing environment. In this role, you ensure a safe and productive work area, follow detailed work orders and specifications, and support the production team by filling in across different positions as needed. You contribute directly to consistent quality, accurate order fulfillment, and reliable customer service.

Responsibilities

  • Assemble materials for shipment or components in accordance with detailed specifications and instructions on work orders.
  • Select materials based on specific heat numbers, physical condition, and packaging requirements as outlined on orders.
  • Count materials accurately and record heat or test numbers, symbols, random lengths, and other required information on work orders.
  • Prepare and package materials for outbound shipment using appropriate banding and packaging tools.
  • Use measurement tools such as tape measures and gauges to verify lengths, sizes, and specifications before shipment.
  • Maintain safety, quality, and productivity standards for every job assignment and work area.
  • Handle materials safely and efficiently, including staging and moving products, with forklift and overhead crane equipment where qualified.
  • Apply attention to detail when inspecting materials and verifying order specifications to prevent shipment errors.
  • Interpret and follow work orders, packaging specifications, and customer requirements to ensure accurate order fulfillment.
  • Demonstrate basic problem-solving skills and adaptability by filling in for absent positions (excluding maintenance) and supporting workflow in a dynamic production environment.
  • Complete shipping and receiving tasks such as picking, staging, and preparing orders for outbound shipment.
  • Record inventory and production data, including lot numbers and heat numbers, to support accurate tracking through the production process.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned, recognizing that responsibilities and activities may change as business needs evolve.
Essential Skills
  • Ability to successfully complete a skills-based assessment evaluating reading, math, inspection and measurement, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and inspection accuracy when counting materials, recording data, and verifying order specifications.
  • Proficiency in assembly and packaging tasks in a production or warehouse environment.
  • Ability to understand and follow work orders, specifications, and packaging requirements.
  • Proficient use of hand tools, including banding and packaging tools, for securing and bundling materials.
  • Comfort using measurement tools such as tape measures and gauges to verify lengths, sizes, and specifications.
  • Basic math skills for counting, measuring, and accurately recording material data.
  • Material handling experience, with the ability to move, stage, and load materials safely.
  • Basic problem-solving skills and adaptability to work across different roles and maintain workflow.
  • Mechanical aptitude and comfort working with metal products in a manufacturing environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Certified forklift operation experience in a production or warehouse setting (preferred).
  • Overhead crane or hoist experience using slings, chains, and lifting devices to handle metal materials (preferred).
  • Experience with shipping, receiving, and order fulfillment, including picking, staging, and preparing outbound orders.
  • Inventory tracking and documentation experience, such as recording lot numbers, heat numbers, and tracking materials through production.
  • Experience in the metals or steel industry, including steel service centers or fabrication shops (preferred).

Work Environment

This role is based in a large, standard manufacturing facility that is not climate controlled, so temperatures may vary with the seasons. You work on a production floor with a team of around 40 people, collaborating closely to meet daily output and quality goals. The environment involves industrial metal products, material handling equipment, and hands-on assembly and packaging tasks. The typical dress code includes steel toe boots, jeans, and a t-shirt. Available shifts include 1st shift from 4:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 2nd shift from 2:30 p.m. to 1:00 a.m., Monday through Thursday.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $22.69 - $22.69/hr.
