Job Description

The Ohio Department of Health (ODH) is seeking an experienced, mission-driven leader to serve as the Bureau Chief. This critical leadership role oversees managers and staff responsible for statewide and local emergency preparedness, planning, and response activities.

As a key member of the agency's leadership team, the Bureau Chief will collaborate with fellow bureau chiefs and executive leadership to advance the agency's mission of promoting and protecting the health and well‑being of all Ohioans.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide strategic direction and oversight to managers and staff within BHP.
• Lead operational planning and coordination for statewide and local emergency events.
• Cultivate an environment of engagement, positivity, and accountability across the bureau.
• Collaborate with agency leadership to ensure alignment with organization goals, statutory requirements, and public health best practices.
• Serve as a visible, effective leader during critical incidents, ensuring clarity of communication, operational excellence, and strong team performance.
• Represent the bureau and agency in internal and external forums to support preparedness initiatives.

Qualifications

• 6 yrs. exp. in planning & administering health program(s).

  -Or

• Completion of graduate core program in field of public health, health administration, preventive medicine, social work, nursing or other health-related field or public policy & management/public administration or business administration;

  3 yrs. exp. in planning & administering health program(s).

  -Or

• 12 mos. exp. as Health Planning Administrator 3, 65247.

  -Or

• 2 yrs. exp. as Health Planning Administrator 2, 65246. Note: applicants for any bureau chief position in Ohio Department of Health must satisfy qualifications cited in Chapter 37 of Administrative Code for particular bureau for which application is being made.

Supplemental Information

ALL ANSWERS TO THE SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONS MUST BE SUPPORTED BY THE WORK EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION PROVIDED ON YOUR CIVIL SERVICE APPLICATION.

Unless required by legislation, the selected candidate will begin at Pay Grade 16, Step 1 of the Exempt Pay Range Schedule ($48.93 per hour), with an opportunity for pay increase after six months ($51.65) of satisfactory performance and then a yearly raise thereafter.

All final applicants tentatively selected for this class will be required to submit to urinalysis to test for illegal drug use prior to appointments. An applicant with a positive test shall not be offered employment.

This position falls within the unclassified civil service status, employees in the unclassified civil service of the State of Ohio serve at the pleasure of the appointing authority and may be removed from their unclassified position at any time for any legal reason.
