Gas Design Technician I, II, III, Project Manager

Design the energy infrastructure that powers Florida's communities

At Peoples Gas System (PGS), our Gas Design team plays a critical role in delivering safe, reliable natural gas to homes, businesses, and communities across Florida. From residential developments to large commercial and public infrastructure projects, Gas Design Technicians help plan, design, and coordinate the systems that keep energy flowing.

This posting represents a career progression. Candidates may be hired at Level I, II, III, or Project Manager depending on experience, qualifications, and business needs - with clear opportunities to grow.

What You'll Do (All Levels)

Regardless of level, Gas Design Technicians are responsible for supporting gas distribution construction and maintenance projects from concept through completion. You will:

  • Partner with residential and commercial customers, developers, contractors, municipalities, and internal teams to understand project needs and timelines
  • Design gas distribution systems, perform feasibility and load analyses, and model system performance using industry software
  • Create and manage work orders, construction requests, cost estimates, and project documentation
  • Prepare construction drawings, permits, easements, and rightofway documentation
  • Use GIS and CAD tools to design, update, and maintain gas system mapping and records
  • Coordinate construction activities across Engineering, Operations, contractors, and external agencies
  • Support regulatory compliance, budgeting, and financial tracking for capital and O&M projects

Gas Design Technician I

Who This Role Is For

You're building your technical foundation and gaining handson experience in gas distribution design. You enjoy learning, problemsolving, and working with experienced teammates who guide your development.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with customer needs assessments and feasibility reviews
  • Prepare basic designs, drawings, and documentation

  • Maintain system records and GIS data

Requirements

  • Minimum of a High School Diploma or GED equivalent from an accredited school/institution.
  • Valid Driver License with a safe driving record.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of work experience related to the Duties and Responsibilities of this position is required. Related experience consists of work related to the items described below:
    • A college degree from an accredited institution may be considered in lieu of some work experience.
  • The ability to effectively meet and assist customers in making technical decisions that pertain to the project, and conduct needs and feasibility assessments on new construction projects and load additions determining the schedule and required completion dates.
  • Knowledge and understanding of past land use and/or utility accommodation guide agreements.
  • Knowledge and/or proficiency with utility industry software including, but not limited to: work management systems, GIS, Customer Information Systems (CIS), etc.

Gas Design Technician II

Who This Role Is For

You're an experienced Gas Design professional ready to take on more complex projects and serve as a technical resource for others. You're comfortable working independently and managing multiple priorities.

Responsibilities

  • Lead coordination with FDOT, counties, cities, utilities, and contractors
  • Interpret complex roadway and infrastructure plans

  • Manage larger residential and commercial developments with multiyear timelines

Requirements

  • Minimum of a High School Diploma or GED equivalent from an accredited school/institution.
  • Valid Driver License with a safe driving record.
  • Minimum 2-4 years of experience as a PGS Gas Design Technician I or combined 4 years of PGS and/or directly equivalent distribution design experience with another utility required; Experience must consist of progressively more complex technical assignments related to the Duties and Responsibilities and the described below:
    • A college degree from an accredited institution may be considered in lieu of some work experience.
  • Must have demonstrated and sustained above expected performance as a Gas Design Technician I with the ability and potential for assuming greater responsibility.   Must have the technical knowledge and analytical skills needed to interpret site development plans for residential, commercial and governmental projects and identify impacts to PGS.

Gas Design Technician III

You're a subject matter expert who leads complex, highimpact projects and mentors others. You're trusted to make sound technical decisions and represent PGS on major initiatives.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a High School Diploma or GED equivalent from an accredited school/institution.
  • Valid Driver License with a safe driving record.
  • Minimum 2-4 years of experience as a PGS Gas Design Technician II or combined 6 years of PGS and/or directly equivalent distribution design experience with another utility required; Experience must consist of progressively more complex technical assignments related to the Duties and Responsibilities and the described below required of this position.
    • College degree as described above may be considered in lieu of some work experience.
  • Must have demonstrated and sustained above expected performance as a Gas Design Technician II with the ability and potential for assuming greater responsibility.   Must have the technical knowledge and analytical skills needed to interpret site development plans for residential, commercial and governmental projects and identify impacts to PGS.

Gas Design Project Manager

Who this role is for
You are a senior gas design professional who combines deep technical expertise with strong project leadership. You oversee complex, multiyear infrastructure projects and play a key role in strategic planning, budgeting, and stakeholder engagement across the organization.

  • Serves as a technical and leadership mentor across the Gas Design team

Responsibilities

  • Manage complex and diverse gas distribution projects from concept through installation

  • Coordinate internal teams, contractors, municipalities, and regulatory agencies
  • Develop and manage capital budgets, forecasts, and financial tracking
  • Represent PGS in customer meetings, construction updates, and regulatory discussions
  • Assign, review, and inspect work performed by Gas Design Technicians
  • Provide leadership, training, and process improvement across the department

Requirements

  • A minimum of an Associate Degree in a related field from an accredited college/university is required. Related fields include disciplines such as Engineering, Construction Management, Architecture, Applied Sciences, or Business Administration.
  • Valid Driver License with a safe driving record.
  • A minimum of eight (8) years of work experience in progressively more complex technical assignments, directly related to the Duties and Responsibilities of this position and the items described in the Knowledge, Skills and Ability section is required
  • Advanced gas design or utility infrastructure experience with progressively increasing responsibility
  • Demonstrated project leadership, communication, and mentoring capability

WHERE AND HOW YOU WILL WORK

  • Work hours consist of a minimum of 8-hours per day Monday through Friday. Some overtime is required to meet Customer deadlines and storm response.
  • Working conditions are both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • The level of stress is moderate to heavy depending upon the level of interaction with customers and governmental agencies.
  • May be assigned to the Call-Out rotation schedule as an after-hours coordinator for emergency response.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/REQUIREMENTS

  • Physical demand requirements include working in field conditions, walking in rough terrain, lifting objects up to 50 lbs., and 
  • wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment in an 8-hour day.
