Job description:

  • Prepares and coordinates the plans and schedules for new or existing programs.
  • Determines, monitors, and reviews costs, operational budgets and schedules, and manpower requirements.
  • Supports and participates in negotiations with customer.
  • Analyzes effects of projects upon various areas such as Engineering, Facilities, and the labor pool to determine the most practical and cost-efficient methods to obtain the required resources.
  • Resolves proposal preparation problems and assesses the progress against established plans and parameters.
  • Formulates and recommends corrective action measures such as schedule revisions, manpower adjustments, fund allocations, and work requirements.
  • The positions serves as the Mechanical System Engineer for the Utilities Engineering group.
  • It requires a subject matter expert (SME) providing technical oversight for various mechanical utility distribution systems and plants.
  • The Mechanical System Engineer is required to develop a cohesive working relationship with utility system operators and maintenance personnel.
  • The candidate should have extensive knowledge of piping principles, centrifugal pumps and water distribution systems.

The candidate’s day-to-day responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

o Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues within assigned utility system(s)

o Provide engineering resolutions for system problems/configuration changes

o Produce and/or oversee the development of technical documentation that govern the system design, configuration, and operation.

o Develop a long-range strategic plan for improvements to assigned utility system(s)

o Participate in the development of planned maintenance requirements

o Support resolution of unplanned events

o Develop and maintain critical system metrics

o Participate in project design and implementation process for system related projects

o Oversee project/system testing to ensure system meets technical requirements and operates at peak performance

Basic Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree and 10 years of experience. 

Master’s Degree and 8 years of experience. 

4 years of related exempt experience can be substituted for Bachelor’s degree. 

8 years of non-related exempt experience can be substituted for Bachelor’s degree. 

An Apprentice Certificate or graduation from Navy Nuclear Power School can be substituted for Bachelor’s degree.

Mechanical Engineering degree with a Professional Engineering (PE) license, or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) working towards PE registration, is preferred.

Knowledge of ASME codes and experience with heavy industrial mechanical systems is preferred

Shipyard/Nuclear facilities experience is desirable

Knowledge of NFPA codes and standards is preferred
