National Grid is hiring a Senior Engineer (Electrical Asset Management), Electrical Engineering for a Hybrid local to Waltham, MA
Job Purpose
The Senior Engineer provides the technical leadership for transmission line engineering standards, design, guidance, and material specifications that support safe, reliable, compliant, and constructible transmission assets across National Grid's U.S. service territory. This role owns and advances standards for new and existing transmission lines from 69 kV through 345 kV, aligning technical requirements with business objectives, regulatory obligations, field execution needs, and emerging industry practices.
Key Accountabilities
• Lead the development, revision, and implementation of transmission line engineering standards, design guidelines, material specifications, and procedures to reduce risk and maintain compliance with applicable codes, regulations, and National Grid requirements.
• Provide technical support to Engineering, Design, Operations, Construction, and other stakeholder groups on standards, materials, equipment applications, and field implementation questions.
• Identify, evaluate, and qualify manufacturers, materials, and equipment based on safety, reliability, performance, constructability, service support, and industry contribution.
• Engage subject matter experts and cross-functional stakeholders to develop technically sound standards, training content, and implementation practices.
• Monitor industry standards, conferences, seminars, and emerging technologies to keep transmission line standards current and support future adoption where value is demonstrated.
• Investigate equipment problems, field issues, and failures with manufacturers, vendors, and internal stakeholders; document findings and recommend corrective, preventive, or procurement actions.
• Research, evaluate, and support pilots for innovative technologies that improve safety, reliability, efficiency, or lifecycle performance for the transmission line business.
• Support incident analysis activities, complete assigned action items, and translate lessons learned into standards, procedures, or material improvements where appropriate.
• Travel as required to support manufacturer qualifications, technical evaluations, field investigations, training, and industry conference participation.
• Prepare clear written and oral reports summarizing technical issues, investigative findings, engineering recommendations, and implementation actions.
• Participate in emergency storm response per the assigned storm role as needed.
Qualifications
• Bachelor of Science in Electrical, Civil / Structural, or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited engineering school.
• Minimum of 5 years of relevant and progressive engineering experience, preferably in transmission line engineering.
• Experience with transmission design software, including PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, and MFAD.
• Working knowledge of industry standards, safety standards, and current electrical design codes, especially the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC).
• Valid driver's license required with acceptable driving record that meets National Grid's Safe Driver Policy.
• Able to travel throughout the service territory and work extended hours when required, including during system emergencies, storm response, company meetings, field visits, and training across New England and Upstate New York.
