Job Summary: Solution Engineer Principal - Business Applications (Onsite, Columbus, OH)
About the Role
AEP Energy is seeking a highly experienced Solution Engineer Principal to drive the technical support and enhancement of our core energy business applications. You'll play a pivotal hands-on role in sustaining and advancing enterprise trading, risk management, and data-driven pricing platforms. This position offers direct collaboration with business experts, meaningful ownership of critical processes, and the opportunity to build deep expertise across Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle environments.
Responsibilities
- Deliver proactive production support for data-intensive energy platforms, databases, scheduled jobs, interfaces, and operational tools.
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve application, database, integration, and data-processing incidents quickly and safely.
- Develop, optimize, and deploy stored procedures, queries, automation scripts, and application enhancements to reduce manual work and recurring defects.
- Restore service during outages, perform root-cause analysis, and implement durable solutions to prevent incident recurrence.
- Improve monitoring, alerting, error handling, and operational transparency across business applications.
- Collaborate with business SMEs to understand processes, reproduce issues, validate corrections, and ensure high-quality outcomes.
- Create and maintain technical documentation, support runbooks, and troubleshooting guides.
- Cross-train with team members to ensure sustainable coverage and participate in knowledge transfer sessions.
- Coordinate with packaged software, SaaS providers, and external development partners as needed.
- Support after-hours incident response for mission-critical processes during peak periods.
Required Skills and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or related field; or equivalent experience.
- 8+ years in application development, database development, integration, or production support roles.
- Advanced SQL skills with deep expertise in either Microsoft SQL Server/T-SQL or Oracle/SQL.
- Proven experience developing and troubleshooting stored procedures, scheduled jobs, batch processes, and data transformations.
- Proficiency with at least one enterprise application development language (C#/.NET or Java).
- Strong incident response, root-cause analysis, and technical documentation skills.
- Track record supporting mission-critical enterprise applications in production environments.
- Experience with REST APIs, file transfers, SFTP, and data integrations.
- Source control, structured testing, change management, and rollback experience.
- Willingness to provide after-hours support as needed.
Preferred Skills
- Expertise in both Microsoft SQL Server/T-SQL and Oracle/SQL.
- Background supporting energy trading, risk management, or commodity management platforms.
- Experience with Azure, Azure DevOps, GitHub or Git, IIS, Power Automate.
- Familiarity with Excel-based operational interfaces and SaaS integrations.
- Prior work with retail-energy applications, market-data services, or distributed teams.
- Relevant certifications (database, cloud, development, ITIL, or DevOps).
