Job Summary: This is a 13-week contract position for a Registered Nurse in a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) at a medical center. The unit is a mixed acuity setting with PCU and medical-surgical/telemetry patients, with patient ratios of 1:4-5 (up to 1:6 in extreme situations). The role involves caring for patients with COPD, respiratory distress, COVID-19, flu, and pulmonary embolism, with many patients requiring ventilators, chest tubes, CPAP/BiPAP support, and telemetry monitoring. The unit operates with a team lead present in a 3:1 ratio, two respiratory therapists, and an assistant nurse manager on shift including weekends. No nurse cares for more than one ventilator patient at a time. Floating to like units is required. Weekend commitment is 4 shifts in 6 weeks (staffing needs may require more). Return to Onsite (RTO) after booking is not allowed and cannot be worked out onsite; any call-offs or additional RTO on the unit could result in contract cancellation and Do-Not-Return (DNR) status.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide direct patient care to PCU patients with mixed acuity, including chronic tracheostomy/ventilator patients, COPD exacerbations, pneumonia, acute respiratory failure, and patients with chest tubes
- Initiate and manage IV lines, operate and monitor ventilators, interpret and manage telemetry, and manage CPAP/BiPAP equipment
- Interpret and manage cardiac dysrhythmias on telemetry
- Administer drips including Dopamine, Cardizem, and Heparin
- Collaborate with team leads, respiratory therapists, the vascular access team, and other support services
- Float to like units as assigned
- Work a 12-hour night shift schedule with weekend requirements
- Document and communicate using EPIC, Pyxis, and SBAR
Required Skills:
- IV start
- Ventilator management
- Telemetry interpretation and monitoring
- CPAP/BiPAP management
- Interpretation and management of cardiac dysrhythmias
- Current ACLS certification
- Current BLS certification
- Minimum 2 years of registered nursing experience
- Ability to work 12-hour night shifts
- Flexibility to float to similar units
Preferred Skills:
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale) certification
- First-time traveler experience (unit will accept first-time travelers)
Education Requirements:
- Current RN License required
- Current ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) certification required
- Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required
- Must pass EKG testing prior to start for this specialty
- NIHSS certification preferred
Required Experience:
- Minimum 2 years of registered nursing experience required
- Experience with IV starts, ventilator management, telemetry interpretation, CPAP/BiPAP support, and cardiac dysrhythmia management
Work Environment / Physical Requirements:
- 12-hour night shifts (6:45 PM - 7:15 AM)
- 4 weekend shifts in 6 weeks required (staffing needs may require more)
- Floating required to like units
- Patient population includes COVID-19 patients
- High-acuity patient care environment with complex medical conditions
- Must be available to work block scheduling when unit needs are met
- Scrubs: white or navy blue (not provided)
- 24-hour unit orientation provided
- 36-hour weeks can be offered
- RTO (Return to Onsite) 7 days maximum for auto-offer positions

- Unit has 48 total beds
- CNA ratios are 9-10:1
- Must pass EKG testing prior to start
- COVID-19 patient care: Patient population currently includes care for COVID-19 patients, including those who have tested positive
- Locals accepted; rate difference available
- Unit will accept 13-week contracts; unit accepts first-time travelers
