What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Solutions Architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Solutions Architect, you need a solid background in systems design, cloud technologies, and software development, often supported by a relevant degree and experience with large-scale IT projects. Proficiency with tools such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, and certifications like AWS Certified Solutions Architect or TOGAF, are typically required. Strong communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder management skills help you translate business needs into technical solutions and collaborate across teams. These competencies ensure you can design robust, scalable architectures that align with organizational goals and adapt to evolving requirements.

How does a Solutions Architect typically collaborate with other teams during a project?

A Solutions Architect frequently works alongside project managers, developers, business analysts, and stakeholders to ensure that technical solutions align with business goals. This role involves translating business requirements into technical specifications, facilitating communication between technical and non-technical teams, and overseeing the implementation process. Effective collaboration is key, as Solutions Architects must often mediate between differing viewpoints and ensure that solutions are scalable, secure, and cost-effective. Regular meetings, workshops, and design sessions are common to maintain alignment throughout the project lifecycle.

What are Solutions Architects?

Solutions Architects are professionals who design and oversee the implementation of complex technology solutions for organizations. They work closely with business stakeholders and technical teams to ensure that proposed solutions meet both business requirements and technical standards. Solutions Architects often select appropriate technologies, create architectural diagrams, and provide guidance throughout the project lifecycle. Their role is crucial in bridging the gap between business needs and technical execution, ensuring scalable and effective results.

What is the difference between Solutions Architect vs Cloud Engineer?

Job description

Overview

We are seeking a Solution Architect (SA) who is the definitive owner of the technical "source of truth" and the primary guardian of System Integrity. As a specialized "heavyweight" in our technical solutions team, your focus is not just on Shopify as a standalone platform, but on the entire enterprise ecosystem. We need a true Systems Architect who understands how a storefront communicates with complex back-office infrastructures like SAP or NetSuite.

You are the bridge between a high-level sales vision and a successful implementation. You don’t just confirm "Yes, we can build that" during the sales phase; you remain present through discovery and architecture to validate that every emerging detail aligns with the original technical vision. You are the architect of the blueprint that prevents the "Silo Effect" and ensures delivery excellence for our $250M+ Enterprise merchants.

Responsibilities

The below list represents the major tasks assigned to incumbents in this job. They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all tasks.

  • Lead Technical Design: Act as the primary owner of the technical 'source of truth' by defining system blueprints, including data schemas, architecture, and integration specifications.
  • Confirm Technical Feasibility: Partner closely with a Solution Engineer (SE) during the Sales phase to provide initial feasibility checks and confirm that complex promises (like ERP syncs or custom Shopify Functions) are buildable.
  • Bridge Sales to Delivery: Stay active during the Delivery phase to provide technical validation for the requirements gathered by Business Analysts (BAs) and ensure technical continuity from the pitch to the build.
  • Architect the Ecosystem: Select the app stack and design integration middleware that supports business outcomes and technical ROI for Enterprise-level accounts.
  • Solve Technical Hurdles: Support the Delivery phase and Product Owners by resolving complex technical or functional hurdles that arise during implementation.
  • Internal Innovation: Identify gaps in execution—such as better CI/CD patterns or headless frameworks—and build internal playbooks to close them.
Requirements
  • Ecosystem Orchestration: Deep fluency in the "Enterprise Ecosystem," including ERPs (SAP, NetSuite), OMS, PIM (Inriver), and middleware technologies (Mulesoft, Workato).
  • Multi-System Integrity: Proven ability to design architectures where the E-commerce platform communicates seamlessly with complex legacy systems.
  • Enterprise Vision: Ability to act as an "Executive Consultant" for high-GMV merchants, focusing on international expansion risks and technical ROI.
  • Collaborative Leadership: Proven ability to mentor SAs and BAs, providing "air cover" on high-stakes projects to ensure successful delivery.
  • Strategic Validation: Expertise in validating "Sales Visions" to ensure they are strategically sound and commercially viable before implementation begins.
  • Solutioning Agility: Ability to transition smoothly from supporting Sales feasibility to leading high-level structural design in Discovery and Architecture.
  • Experience: 8-10+ years of experience in technical architecture, systems engineering, or digital transformation, with a proven track record of delivering complex enterprise E-commerce solutions
Soft Skills
  • The "Technical Bridge": Exceptional ability to translate complex technical architecture into business value for non-technical stakeholders (CEOs, CMOs, and E-commerce Managers).
  • Documentation & Communication: Advanced proficiency in technical storytelling, including the creation of high-fidelity architecture diagrams, technical design documents (TDDs), and data-flow blueprints that clearly communicate complex "source of truth" solutions to both executive stakeholders and delivery teams.
  • Conflict Management & Diplomacy: Ability to navigate the "political tension" of enterprise projects, such as balancing a CMO’s desire for a "Headless" build with a Manager’s need for "Easy Editing."
  • Strategic Skepticism: A disciplined approach to "The How"—the ability to say "No" or "Not this way" to a sales promise if it compromises the long-term integrity of the technical ecosystem.
  • Ownership Mentality: A self-motivated professional who takes complete ownership of the technical "Source of Truth" from the point of contract signing through to delivery excellence.

The duties and responsibilities described here are not a comprehensive list and the scope of the job may change as necessitated by business demands. Anatta Design reserves the right to revise the job description as circumstances warrant.
