Job description

Job Overview

Fairview is hiring a Registered Nurse (RN) for our Emergency Department at our M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center - West Bank location in Minneapolis, MN. 

The registered nurse in the Emergency Department is responsible and accountable for patient assessment, analysis, nursing diagnosis, planning, intervention application, and the identification and evaluation of outcomes for patients of all ages and populations. The scope of practice extends from a patient’s entry into the emergency room and continues from triage through discharge. Care is centered on patients and families experiencing acute or chronic, actual or potential physical or psychosocial problems. Unique to emergency nursing are processes that require resuscitation and/or stabilization.

Schedule: This position is a 0.75 FTE (60 hours every two weeks), 12-hour evening (1pm - 1:30am) shift, with an every third weekend rotation.

  • We are committed to delivering exceptional healthcare in a setting where we specialize in innovation. We continually aim to improve our patients' lives by delivering superior outcomes using groundbreaking technology and treatments while balancing patients' needs. The hospital has been providing innovative care and community services to the residents of the scenic Minnesota Valley since 1984. We deliver a broad range of pediatric programs from surgery, imaging and neonatal and pediatric intensive care to cardiac and oncology (cancer care) services and blood and marrow and organ transplantation. We are seeking new talent to meet our volume and growth demands. 
  • We offer 19 beds in the main section, 7 beds in section two, and deliver care to 30,000 patients annually (80 daily).
  • Our nurse to patient ratio is about 1:4-5 and 50% of our cases are mental health related.
  • Our partnership with the University of Minnesota Medical School and University of Minnesota Physicians provides the platform to specialize in breakthrough treatments, surgical techniques, lifesaving therapies and to train tomorrow's physicians. Clinical trials advance our clinical services, bringing the very newest insights inpatient care.

As an Emergency Department RN, you will be responsible for:

  • Delivering care to all ages and acuity of patients that seek medical care. Some unique patient populations include pediatrics, sexual assault survivors, psychiatric, trauma, solid organ and blood and marrow transplant, substance abuse.
  • Safely performing  advanced monitoring using current technology.
  • Managing and safely administers complex medication and infusion therapies. Adjusts the patient’s plan of care following the evaluation of patient’s response to the infusion.
    • Sedatives and Paralytics, Analgesics, Adrenergics (sympathomimetics), Antianginals, Thrombolytics, Antiarrthymics, Antihypertensives, Heparin, Antibiotics, Fluid and electrolyte replacement, Insulin, Blood products (FFP, Platelets, Cryo, Albumin).
  • Caring for patients undergoing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures/interventions on the unit.
    • Chest tube placement, needle thoracentesis, pericardiocentesis, needle cricothyrotomy with jet insufflation, external pacing, cardioversion, defibrillation, forensic collection, rapid sequence intubation, splint application, wound care and closure, conscious sedation, and spinal immobilization.
  • Demonstrating ability to safely and accurately operate unit equipment.
  • Demonstrating ability to deliver care or service adjusting approaches to reflect developmental level and cultural differences of population served
  • Fulfilling all organizational requirements
  • Fostering  a culture of improvement, efficiency and innovative thinking.

Required Qualifications:

  • Education
    • Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN/ASN)
  • License/Certification/Registration
    • Current MN RN license
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers 
  • Experience
    • 3 years of Emergency Room RN experience
  • Additional Requirements
    • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification within 6 months of hire
    • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) certification within one year of hire
    • Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC) certification within one year of hire

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Education
    • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • License/Certification/Registration
    • Certification by the Emergency Nurses Association (CEN) and/or course in advanced trauma nursing (CATN).
  • Experience
    • 5 years of Emergency Department or critical care experience
