To thrive as an Occupational Health Nurse, you need expertise in workplace health management, risk assessment, and regulatory compliance, typically supported by an RN license and specialized occupational health certification (such as COHN or COHN-S). Familiarity with health surveillance tools, electronic health record systems, and incident reporting software is critical. Strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills help in educating employees and collaborating with management. These competencies ensure the promotion of employee health, prevention of workplace injuries, and adherence to safety standards.

What are some common challenges Occupational Health Nurses face when balancing clinical duties with administrative responsibilities?

Occupational Health Nurses (OHNs) often juggle a variety of responsibilities, including direct patient care, health surveillance, case management, and compliance with workplace safety regulations. One common challenge is managing time effectively between hands-on clinical tasks, such as treating workplace injuries, and administrative duties like maintaining records, conducting health risk assessments, and coordinating health programs. Effective prioritization and strong organizational skills are essential, as is frequent communication with management, employees, and external healthcare providers to ensure all aspects of occupational health are addressed.
