What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Marketing professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Marketing professional, you need a strong grasp of market research, branding, campaign strategy, and typically at least a bachelor's degree in marketing or a related field. Familiarity with digital marketing tools, analytics platforms like Google Analytics, and certifications such as HubSpot or Google Ads are highly valuable. Creativity, adaptability, and strong communication skills help you craft compelling messages and collaborate effectively across teams. These skills are crucial for driving brand awareness, engaging target audiences, and achieving business goals in a competitive marketplace.

How does a marketing professional typically collaborate with other departments within a company?

Marketing professionals regularly work cross-functionally with departments like sales, product development, and customer service to align strategies and messaging. For example, they may partner with sales to develop campaigns that support lead generation, or with product teams to ensure that promotional materials accurately reflect new features. Close collaboration helps ensure consistent branding and a seamless customer experience. Effective communication and teamwork are key to delivering successful marketing initiatives.

What is marketing and what do marketers do?

Marketing is the process of promoting, selling, and distributing a product or service to customers. Marketers identify target audiences, develop strategies to reach them, and create campaigns that build brand awareness and drive sales. Their work often involves market research, advertising, digital marketing, social media management, and analyzing data to measure the effectiveness of marketing efforts. Ultimately, marketers help businesses connect with consumers and achieve their business goals.

Job description

Director of Communications

Job Summary:

The Director of Communications will lead and refine the Jewish Connection Network’s communications strategy for engaging constituents, while building and implementing a more formalized communications approach for partners and community leadership. This individual will also be a key contributor to development efforts, supporting grant writing, grant reporting and community leadership communications. As a newly created position, the Director will report to the Executive Director and serve as a key member of the Senior Team, providing strategic leadership and overseeing the implementation of communication across the organization.

This is a full-time, hybrid position that requires a minimum of two days per week in the office, with other occasional nights and weekends.

In this role, you will:

  • Develop and oversee a communications strategy to support the Agency’s evolving work with partner agencies and community leadership in Baltimore.
  • Administer existing content development and performance metrics for constituent communications, including social media, e-newsletters, email, website updates, and digital campaigns.
  • Supervise the agency’s Executive Assistant, who implements many communications tactics.
  • Manage a cross-functional internal team of contributors, as well as relationships with external vendors (e.g., graphic designer, web developer).
  • Support grant writing, grant reporting, and stewardship communications.
  • Craft messaging about The Jewish Connection Network and The Associated for Network events and peer engagement trainings.
  • Partner with the members of the marketing committee to analyze quarterly metrics and discuss new strategic directions related to brand awareness, sharing stories of impact, and increasing audience engagement.

What we're looking for:

A strategic, mission-driven communications leader who proactively shapes and executes the agency’s voice, brand, and storytelling. You are energized by crafting compelling narratives, elevating impact, and building meaningful connections across diverse audiences. With a strong foundation in communications strategy, content development, marketing campaign management and grant-writing, you bring experience leading cross-channel efforts, supporting high-visibility events and programs, and engaging stakeholders and volunteers. You are excited to strengthen an innovative organization’s presence and amplify the stories of community members on their diverse Jewish journeys.

  • 5-8 years of relevant work experience with supervisory experience required.
  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred.
  • Proven track record managing grants, marketing campaigns, media relations, and messaging strategy
  • Ability to work in an energized, innovative environment with high standards.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strategic thinking and brand management.
  • Experience with tools like media monitoring platforms, CMS, email marketing systems, and analytics dashboards
  • Understanding of SEO and digital performance metrics
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently in an energized environment.
  • Commitment to fostering an inclusive Jewish community.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft 365.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed, including paid holidays.
