Elevator Pitch:

Philo is a reinvented television streaming service building the future of television. They are headquartered in San Francisco, but have offices in Brooklyn, NY and Cambridge, MA as well. Philo's CEO, Andrew McCollum, is actually a co-founder of Facebook with Mark Zuckerberg - basically, Philo is working to reinvent the television experience for the modern age, and create an amazing experience for their users to watch the shows they love.

Today, Philo offers a package of top-rated television channels for just $25 a month. You can watch live, save unlimited shows to watch later, or browse their huge library of content available on-demand. Their services can be streamed across all devices and the web.

Selling Points: Great work environment and culture, great benefits, and LOTS of backing from huge organizations like Discovery, Viacom, AMC, A&E, and HBO.

Location: Brooklyn, NY, Cambridge, MA, and SF (hiring 2-3 people for this role) Right now fully remote, but need people willing to come in for a Hybrid work method at some point soon

Salary: 5-8 years of experience up to 175K, 8-10 years of experience up to 200K + huge equity (20-30K) (Sell the equity for anyone who is taking a pay cut - the equity will be worth a ton)

Position summary:

The Android team at Philo is responsible for building their product experience on four different platforms from one codebase - Android Mobile, Android TV, Amazon Fire Tablets, and Amazon FireTV. They are a small autonomous team building apps with high engagement for millions of installs, which collectively are responsible for a huge fraction of the billions of minutes watched on Philo each year. The team is passionate about crafting the best possible UX to connect their users with the content they love, providing a seamless viewing experience while surprising them with new features and capabilities.

They are looking for an Engineer to own what they build from start to finish, and someone who is passionate about continuously delivering exciting features to a huge user base. You will be writing quality code, using the latest tools & technologies, and pushing the envelope of what's possible on the platform across a variety of factors and viewing experiences.

Requirements:

  • 5+ years of experience with Mobile Development

  • Extremely proficient with Kotlin (at least 1 year of recent experience)

  • Familiar with the Android Ecosystem, including feature sets and best practices across devices and operating system versions

  • Experience working on consumer facing apps/platforms

Nice to haves:

  • Experience with video playback

  • Experience with or interest in Android based set-top platforms (Fire TV, Android TV, etc.)

  • Experience with GraphQL-based APIs

  • Experience with cross device interoperability (e.g. casting)

  • Experience building multi-model experiences

Interview Process:
  • 1 hr 30 min first round interview with Max (30 mins) then an Engineer for 1 hour
  • 1 hour live coding session with Kotlin, if goes well then next day 3 1-hour interviews
  • Final Interview with CTO
