Job description

POSITION SUMMARY

Strata is seeking a Corporate Risk & Compliance Advisor in Wichita, Kansas. Reporting directly to the President, this individual-contributor role is designed for an early-career professional with a Juris Doctor degree seeking practical in-house experience in commercial contracting, corporate compliance, and business risk management.

The position’s primary responsibility is reviewing, drafting, and negotiating customer and vendor agreements. The role will also support corporate and regulatory compliance, insurance renewals and contract-related insurance reviews, workforce and vendor compliance programs, and related process improvement.

Candidates should have at least two years of relevant experience in corporate legal work, commercial contracts, compliance, risk, or a closely related area. Experience supporting engineering, construction, industrial, manufacturing, energy, or other business-to-business service providers is preferred, but direct oil and gas experience is not required. Bar admission is not required.

The successful candidate must identify and clearly communicate business risk, operate within approved authority, and escalate matters to the President or licensed outside counsel when appropriate. The position offers a pathway to broader responsibility and future management based on demonstrated performance and judgment.

Strata offers an early-career JD the opportunity to build broad in-house experience while working directly with the company's President and operating leaders. The successful candidate will have meaningful ownership of commercial contracts and compliance processes, access to outside specialists, and a defined opportunity to grow into broader responsibility and future management.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Contract Review and Negotiation

  • Review, draft, and negotiate master service agreements, nondisclosure agreements, vendor and subcontractor agreements, purchase orders, leases, amendments, and related commercial documents.
  • Identify, explain, and help resolve issues involving indemnity, insurance, limitations of liability, warranties, confidentiality, intellectual property, payment, termination, dispute resolution, and regulatory obligations.
  • Manage contract redlines, internal approvals, and negotiation history using approved templates, playbooks, fallback positions, and escalation requirements.
  • Coordinate with the President and outside counsel on material deviations, unusual risk, legal opinions, and matters requiring licensed counsel.
  • Maintain contract files, approval records, key obligation tracking, and renewal or expiration information.
  • Help improve contract templates, negotiation guidance, and contract-management workflows.

Corporate and Regulatory Compliance

  • Maintain required business registrations, licenses, corporate records, and related compliance calendars across operating entities and jurisdictions.
  • Monitor and document contractual, federal, state, local, client, and industry compliance requirements affecting Strata's operations.
  • Support policy governance, document retention, audit readiness, client questionnaires, and compliance certifications.
  • Coordinate with outside counsel and technical specialists when regulatory interpretation or subject-matter expertise is required.
  • Track corrective actions and follow through with responsible managers until issues are resolved.

Risk and Insurance Administration

  • Coordinate annual insurance renewals, applications, exposure data, and broker requests.
  • Compare client insurance requirements with Strata's coverage and coordinate exceptions, endorsements, or escalation when requirements do not align.
  • Review contractor and vendor certificates of insurance and related risk-transfer requirements.
  • Support project-specific coverage reviews and occasional claims coordination as needed.

Workforce and Operational Compliance

  • Administer drug and alcohol testing, background screening, and related workforce compliance processes.
  • Support preparation and administration of employment agreements, confidentiality agreements, and other approved workforce documents.
  • Maintain client-required safety consortium participation and Strata's vendor and contractor qualification requirements.
  • Respond to routine compliance requests from managers, clients, vendors, and internal stakeholders.

Reporting, Systems, and Continuous Improvement

  • Prepare concise reports, risk summaries, and recommendations for the President and managers.
  • Develop and maintain practical metrics for contract cycle time, exceptions, compliance status, renewals, and unresolved risk items.
  • Improve contracting, compliance, records, and approval systems and workflows.
  • Use enterprise software, document-comparison tools, and approved artificial-intelligence tools to improve quality and efficiency while protecting confidential information.
  • Build the knowledge, systems, and judgment necessary to assume broader responsibility and potential future management duties.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE, SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Experience
    • At least two (2) years of relevant professional experience in corporate legal work, commercial contracts, compliance, risk management, or a closely related field.
    • The role is designed for an early-career candidate, generally with fewer than five years of corporate legal experience.
    • Law-firm, in-house, consulting, government, or regulated-industry experience may qualify if it includes substantial contract or compliance responsibility.
    • Prior staff-management experience is not required.
  • Education
    • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school is required.
    • Admission to a state bar is not required.
  • Required Skillset
    • Contract Analysis: Able to identify and explain material commercial terms and risk in service agreements and related documents.
    • Legal Research and Issue Spotting: Able to research unfamiliar requirements, distinguish business issues from matters requiring legal advice, and escalate appropriately.
    • Commercial Judgment: Able to balance risk protection with the practical needs of a service business and its clients.
    • Negotiation: Able to communicate clearly, defend reasonable positions, document decisions, and remain constructive during disagreement.
    • Compliance Execution: Able to maintain calendars, records, evidence, approvals, and follow-up actions with consistent attention to detail.
    • Systems Mindset: Able to convert recurring work into clear templates, checklists, workflows, and reporting.
  • Computer Skills
    • High degree of proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word redlining and document comparison.
    • Experience with ERP, contract-lifecycle-management, records, or safety-consortium systems is preferred but not required.
    • Familiarity with artificial intelligence, large language models, GPTs, and related productivity applications.
  • Interpersonal
    • Effectively communicate complex contractual, regulatory, and risk concepts to management, co-workers, clients, vendors, and outside professionals in understandable business terms.
  • Confidentiality: Protect Strata and client confidential information and work appropriately with outside counsel on privileged matters.
  • Written Communication
    • Prepare clear, accurate, and concise contract comments, risk summaries, reports, memoranda, letters, policies, and procedures.
    • Organize information so that decision-makers can understand the issue, options, recommendation, and required action.
  • Workload Management: Prioritize and successfully complete multiple contract reviews, compliance deadlines, and follow-up actions at the same time.
  • Professional Attributes
    • Calm and dependable under pressure and tight deadlines.
    • Detail-oriented, practical, commercially minded, and open to feedback.
    • Self-motivated within the freedom and ambiguity of a growing company.
    • Confident during negotiation and comfortable escalating or saying no when appropriate.
    • Respectful, responsive, punctual, and committed to deadlines.
    • Focused on facilitating successful operations rather than creating unnecessary bureaucracy.
    • Interested in continuous improvement and future leadership responsibility.
  • Attention to Detail
    • Demand high-quality work products and accurate supporting information.
    • Verify material facts and assumptions with internal and external parties.
    • Review and proofread work before requesting internal approval.
  • Physical Activity
    • Must be able to climb stairs.
    • Must be able to lift and carry up to 25 lbs.
  • Transportation: Valid driver's license and safe driving record.
  • Travel: Must be willing and able to travel for at least one week per quarter.
  • Authorization to Work: Must be currently authorized to work in the United States.
  • Screenings: This position requires initial and ongoing background checks and drug and alcohol screenings.
