Description and Functions

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) Transportation Management Center (TMC) is seeking a TMC Seasonal Operator to work in an exciting, fast-paced environment in Cheyenne, Wyoming. This position provides safety-related information to the traveling public using numerous delivery mechanisms to reduce crashes, closures, and fatalities while improving the efficiency of Wyoming Highways.
This is a temporary, full-time position (approx. 9 months).
Cheyenne is a steadily growing community along the Front Range but still true to the history of the Old West. The city offers nearby mountain biking, skiing, hiking, fishing, hunting, and other outdoor activities. Wyoming is one of only seven states with no state income tax.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function that may be performed at the job level.
  • Provides clear and concise safety information concerning Wyoming roadways 24 hours per day.
  • Draws information from various sensors (weather, speed, visibility, traffic volume, webcams, automated vehicle location systems, etc.) as well as from personal reports of plow operators, maintenance forepersons, and volunteer citizens.
  • Gathers information from reports relayed to other WYDOT personnel, other states' DOTs, the Wyoming Highway Patrol, and the traveling public.
  • Relays information via ITS devices (dynamic message signs, highway advisory radios, variable speed limit signs, flashing beacon system, etc.) as well as web and phone-based systems and direct communications.
  • Uses experience and knowledge of Wyoming's transportation system during normal operations and takes direction from lead operators during complex operational scenarios.

Qualifications
PREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:
Preference may be given to those with a High School Diploma plus 0-2 years of progressive work experience (typically in Technical Operations).
**Applicant must be able to type at least 35 wpm.
KNOWLEDGE:
  • Knowledge of Wyoming's transportation system.
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment under stressful situations; ability to adjust readily to changing priorities.
  • Ability to learn new computer programs while having experience with common computer programs such as Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and communicate technical information.
  • Ability to solve problems, prioritize duties, and complete required tasks effectively.
  • Knowledge of troubleshooting techniques to resolve operational and technical issues.
  • Ability to gather relevant information from a variety of sources and disseminate that information accordingly.
  • Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills, including proper English diction, grammar, and spelling.
  • Ability to make decisions independently, as necessary, using the best available information at the time.
  • Ability to be organized, responsible, and timely.
  • Excellent customer service skills.

Necessary Special Requirements
PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • This position requires the employee to sit for an extended period of time to perform the work. However, there may be some walking, standing, bending, carrying light items, driving an automobile, etc.
  • Ability to work on weekends, holidays, and for extended hours during the week. This may include serving in an "on-call" capacity during TMC hours of operation
  • This is a shift work position; employees will be required to work rotating shifts and extended shifts at any time of the day or evening at the discretion of the supervisor
