Job description

Temporary Maintenance Technician / Handyperson - Residential Buildings
Paths is a full-scale, vertically integrated affordable housing developer, builder, and operator. Since 2004, the Paths team has created and preserved high-quality, affordable housing across the U.S. that enhances communities and helps residents build better lives. With over 14,000 units across 13 states under management and more than 500 employees, Paths manages a suite of capabilities spanning the entire property management life cycle, including: development, construction, property management, maintenance, and security.

Summary:
We are looking for hands-on Temporary Maintenance Technicians / Handypersons to support residential buildings across New York City and Long Island based on coverage needs. This is an active, on-your-feet role focused on basic maintenance repairs, work orders, unit turns, and general property support. This temporary role may support different residential buildings depending on operational needs and may not be assigned to one fixed property. Most schedules are daytime hours, but schedules, locations, and assignments may vary based on coverage needs. The ideal candidate has residential, building maintenance, handyperson, or facilities experience and is comfortable troubleshooting basic repair issues, using hand tools, working in occupied apartments, and interacting professionally with residents, property staff, and vendors.

Classification: Non-exempt (eligible for overtime); Non-Union
Location: Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens & Long Island

Essential functions/Responsibilities: duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Perform routine maintenance work and basic repairs at residential properties as needed.
  • Complete work orders in occupied apartments, vacant units, common areas, and other assigned areas.
  • Assist with unit turns and apartment preparation for new residents.
  • Perform light plumbing tasks, such as plunging toilets, clearing basic clogs, replacing fixtures, and assisting with minor leaks as directed.
  • Perform basic electrical support, such as replacing light bulbs, outlets, switches, covers, fixtures, and other simple items within the scope of the role.
  • Perform basic carpentry, drywall, patching, painting, plastering, hardware replacement, door/lock support, and general repair work.
  • Assist with HVAC-related support tasks such as replacing filters and reporting larger issues to the appropriate supervisor or vendor.
  • Use hand tools and power tools safely for routine maintenance and repair tasks.
  • Report larger repair needs, unsafe conditions, leaks, damages, security concerns, or vendor-level issues to the Property Manager, Superintendent, or assigned supervisor.
  • Support building upkeep and all-hands-on-deck work when needed, including moving items, trash-outs, vacant unit cleanouts, grounds support, and basic property cleanup.
  • Communicate professionally with residents, staff, vendors, and supervisors.
  • Follow property instructions, safety procedures, and company policies.
  • Track time and provide updates on assigned work as directed.

Pay Rate: $19.50 per hour

Requirements:

  • Minimum 2 years of maintenance technician, handyperson, facilities, building maintenance, construction, or related hands-on repair experience preferred.
  • Residential or apartment building maintenance experience preferred.
  • Comfortable working in occupied apartments and common areas.
  • Able to perform a variety of basic repairs, including painting, patching, carpentry, light plumbing, basic electrical, fixture replacement, and general maintenance support.
  • Own basic tools required for general handyperson tasks.
  • Hard-shell steel-toe work boots required before reporting to a property.

  • Ability to perform physical, hands-on work throughout the day, including standing, walking, bending, lifting, carrying, climbing stairs, and working indoors or outdoors as needed.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds as needed.
  • Reliable attendance and punctuality required.
  • Good communication skills and a professional demeanor with residents, staff, vendors, and visitors.
  • Comfortable using phone calls, text messages, email, and/or mobile apps for work communication when needed.
  • Flexibility to support different properties and schedules based on operational needs.
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
