What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Back End Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Back End Developer, you need strong programming skills in languages like Java, Python, or Node.js, along with a solid understanding of databases and API design, typically supported by a degree in computer science or related experience. Familiarity with frameworks such as Spring or Django, version control systems like Git, and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS or Azure) is often required, with certifications in these areas considered beneficial. Problem-solving, effective communication, and teamwork are crucial soft skills that help developers collaborate and address complex technical challenges. These competencies are vital for building reliable, scalable systems that support front-end applications and ensure robust product performance.

What are some common challenges Back End Developers face when integrating with front-end teams?

Back End Developers often encounter challenges when aligning data structures and APIs with front-end requirements, especially as user interface needs evolve rapidly during development. Effective communication and regular collaboration with front-end developers are essential to ensure that endpoints, data formats, and error handling are well-coordinated. Additionally, maintaining consistent documentation and using tools like Swagger or Postman can help streamline integration and reduce misunderstandings between teams.

What is a Back End Developer?

A Back End Developer is a programmer who specializes in building and maintaining the server-side logic, databases, and application functionality that power websites and web applications. Unlike front end developers, who focus on the visual and interactive elements users see, back end developers work behind the scenes to ensure data is stored, processed, and delivered correctly. They typically use programming languages like Python, Java, Ruby, or PHP, and interact with databases such as MySQL or MongoDB. Their work is crucial for making sure applications run smoothly, securely, and efficiently.

What is the difference between Back End Developer vs Front End Developer?

Job description

Paradigm is a software company transforming the way that the residential, construction & building product industries operate across the globe. We are looking for a Principal Product Manager – Data Plane and Integrations to be part of revolutionizing these industries. We are building the future of how homes are designed, estimated, and built by revolutionizing construction workflows with modern software engineering, agent-assisted systems, and mobile-first experiences. We are powered by our parent company, Builders FirstSource (NYSE: BLDR): a Fortune 300 company with over $23 billion in revenue and more than 29,000 employees across 550+ locations, BFS is redefining construction through data, digital infrastructure, and AI-powered innovation.

We’re hiring a Principal Product Manager to own the backend architecture, data plane, and integration layer of our core quoting and ordering platform, the system at the heart of how BFS does business. This is a high-impact, technically demanding role where you’ll define how data flows across systems, how third-party integrations scale, and how search and retrieval capabilities evolve to serve thousands of users.

What You Will Do:

  • Own the product strategy and multi-year roadmap for the backend of the quoting and ordering platform, including the data plane that connects to multiple upstream and downstream applications.

  • Identify and resolve systemic constraints in how data flows between various systems and the quoting platform, reducing friction for users.

  • Shape investment decisions and multi-year technical bets that improve platform throughput, reduce order errors, and accelerate quote-to-order cycle times.

  • Define how platform data is surfaced to users through search and retrieval capabilities, ensuring associates and builders can quickly and accurately find products, SKUs, pricing, and order history across BFS's catalog and system complexity.

  • Build and scale a durable integration framework that makes it easy for third-party systems (supplier portals, builder tools, design software) to connect to the platform.

  • Define API strategy, partner onboarding patterns, and data contracts that enable reliable, low-maintenance integrations at enterprise scale.

  • Prioritize integration investments based on business impact, reducing manual workarounds, accelerating partner onboarding, and improving data accuracy across the ecosystem.

  • Influence VP- and SVP-level decisions through clear, data-backed narratives that connect platform investments to business outcomes (order accuracy, speed, cost, customer satisfaction).

  • Lead cross-team alignment for complex, ambiguous initiatives that span engineering, operations, sales, and supply chain, establishing shared priorities and resolving trade-offs.

  • Serve as a trusted technical and strategic thought partner to engineering, design, operations, and business leadership beyond your immediate product domain.

  • Mentor Senior and Staff PMs on product judgment, technical depth, and strategic thinking in platform and infrastructure contexts.

  • Maintain deep awareness of industry trends in construction technology, building product distribution, and enterprise platform architecture to inform strategic direction.

What You Need to Succeed:

  • 12+ years of experience in Product Management, with at least 3 years owning backend platforms, data infrastructure, or integration-heavy products.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Business, or equivalent practical experience.

  • Strong technical fluency. Comfortable discussing API design, data modeling, search architectures, and system integration patterns with engineering teams at a detailed level.

  • Deep business acumen and market insight with the ability to anticipate trends, assess opportunities and risks, and shape product direction.

  • Exceptional communication and executive-influence skills, with the ability to simplify complex technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders and shape decisions at the VP/SVP level.

  • Proven ability to create clarity in ambiguous, cross-organizational environments, setting direction where none exists and guiding teams through large-scale platform changes.

  • Deep experience with systems thinking: able to diagnose how changes in one part of a complex ecosystem affect others, and design solutions that hold up long-term.

  • Strong cross-functional influence skills, with the ability to build trusted, strategic partnerships across departments and act as a thought partner to engineering, design, operations, sales, and executive leadership.

Beneficial Skills and Knowledge:

  • Experience in construction technology, building products, manufacturing, or supply chain/distribution industries.

  • Familiarity with ERP systems, order management platforms, or quoting/CPQ tools in B2B environments.

  • Experience building or scaling developer-facing platforms, APIs, or integration ecosystems.
