Job description

Community Counseling Therapist
New Horizons | Abilene, Texas
Full-Time | Exempt
Salary: $70,000–$75,000 annually
Since 1971, New Horizons has been committed to Keeping Kids First by helping children and families heal, grow, and succeed through caring relationships, support, and high-quality services.
As we continue to grow our Community Counseling Center, we are looking for a fully licensed therapist who wants to do more than maintain a caseload. We are seeking a versatile, relationship-driven clinician who is excited about providing excellent therapy, building connections throughout the community, educating others, and helping expand access to quality mental health services.
The Community Counseling Therapist provides services to children, adolescents, adults, and families in our counseling center, in homes, and within the community as clinically appropriate. This position is ideal for a clinician who values autonomy and variety and wants the opportunity to help shape and grow a developing counseling program.
What You’ll Do
  • Provide high-quality individual, family, and group counseling using evidence-based, trauma-informed, and relationship-based approaches.
  • Build and maintain an active caseload averaging approximately 20–25 client sessions per week.
  • Complete clinical assessments, individualized treatment plans, progress notes, and other required documentation accurately and timely.
  • Provide services in the counseling center, in client homes, and in appropriate community settings based on the clinical needs of children and families.
  • Incorporate Trust-Based Relational Intervention® (TBRI®) principles into clinical practice and work with children, families, caregivers, and agency staff.
  • Proactively develop and maintain referral relationships with schools, healthcare providers, child welfare partners, community organizations, and other referral sources.
  • Serve as an ambassador for New Horizons by promoting available services, developing community relationships, and increasing awareness of the Community Counseling Center.
  • Provide trainings, presentations, consultation, and education to New Horizons staff, caregivers, schools, professionals, and community partners.
  • Serve as a clinical resource related to trauma, attachment, child development, emotional regulation, family dynamics, and behavioral health.
  • Collaborate with New Horizons programs and external partners to promote coordinated, family-centered care.
  • Provide crisis assessment, intervention, and therapeutic de-escalation when clinically appropriate.
  • Participate in periodic on-call or after-hours clinical support as assigned.
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen clinical services, develop referral partnerships, and expand community access to behavioral health care.
  • Maintain compliance with professional ethics, licensing requirements, Medicaid requirements, HIPAA, and New Horizons policies and procedures.
What We’re Looking For
  • Master’s degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, or another qualifying behavioral health field.
  • Current Texas licensure as an LPC, LMFT, or LCSW.
  • Eligible for Medicaid credentialing and billing.
  • Experience providing outpatient mental health services to children, adolescents, adults, and families preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of trauma, attachment, child development, and evidence-based therapeutic interventions.
  • Knowledge of, or willingness to become proficient in, TBRI and the ability to integrate its principles into clinical practice.
  • Strong clinical judgment with the ability to provide crisis intervention, conflict resolution, and therapeutic de-escalation.
  • Comfortable developing professional relationships, building referral networks, and representing New Horizons within the community.
  • Experience providing trainings, presentations, consultation, or education preferred.
  • Excellent communication, organization, documentation, and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Flexibility and willingness to provide services across office, community, and in-home settings and participate in periodic on-call clinical support.
  • Commitment to continued professional growth and New Horizons’ mission of Keeping Kids First.
Why Join New Horizons?
At New Horizons, you’ll have the opportunity to practice clinically and make an impact beyond the therapy room. We want clinicians who bring ideas, build relationships, share their expertise, and help us continue developing services that meet the needs of children and families.
You’ll be supported by an organization that values clinical expertise, professional development, innovation, and the role strong relationships play in helping people heal.
What You Get When You Work for New Horizons
  • 100% paid health insurance premiums for employees after eligibility period
  • Paid Time Off beginning upon hire
  • Eligibility for bonus opportunities
  • Professional development and training
  • Paid work anniversary trips beginning at five years of service
Working at the Community Counseling Center
This position requires flexibility to provide services in office, community, and in-home settings based on client needs. Some evening appointments, community events, trainings, travel within the service area, and periodic on-call clinical support may be required.
If you’re looking for a clinical role where you can do great therapy and help build something bigger, we want to hear from you.
