Job description

Description of Work NOTE: Employees in these positions will be scheduled for not more than twenty-four (24) hours per week. A Juvenile Detention Officer (JDO) provides direct care to juveniles detained in the Muskegon County Juvenile Detention Center (MCJDC). JDO's provide facility security through ongoing supervision of juveniles.

An employee in this class instructs and supervises juveniles in vocational, academic, recreational, and daily personal hygiene activities and maintains accurate records of juvenile behavior. Required Minimum Entrance Qualifications 1. Have completed thirty (30) semester hours of college-level course work from an accredited college or university (or equivalent quarter hours); preferably in one of the following disciplines Criminal Justice, Human Service, Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, Child Development, Corrections, or related field; OR Have a High School Diploma/GED AND a minimum of 2 years demonstrated work experience in a juvenile facility, Child Caring Institution (CCI) or other Department of Child Welfare Licensed facility; OR A minimum of 2 years demonstrated work experience with youth ages 10 - 18 years old.

2. Possess a valid Michigan Driver's License. Physical Conditions / Work Location PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES Employees in this class should be in good physical condition to withstand physical and verbal confrontation with youth and may be required to move or lift youth weighing in excess of one-hundred (100) pounds.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS Employees in this class generally work inside and outdoors at the Muskegon County Juvenile Detention Center. An offer of employment is contingent upon the results of the medical examination and drug screening test

Applicants for County employment may be subject to a post-offer criminal background check, depending on the nature and assignment of the position. When such check is conducted, an offer of employment is contingent upon the results of the criminal background check. Appointees must satisfactorily complete a probationary period before the appointment will be considered permanent.

This list remains in effect for three months unless exhausted or extended.
