Base Salary $40/hour on Inpatient Unit - Potential of earning $47/hour based on Shift Differential 

Shift Differential $5/hr. Nights $2/hr. Weekends

16 Bed Inpatient Unit

Day Shift 7 am - 7 pm

Registered Nurse

Position Summary

Provides and directs physical and mental health care of patients located primarily on the inpatient unit but must be flexible to the needs of HCI including working in other areas of the organization such as Vigo County Outpatient.  Functions as a part of the interdisciplinary treatment team, in which patient care is prescribed.  Position requires some crisis management by phone.  

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

• Demonstrates the ability to conduct and monitor the nursing process, which consists of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care. 

• Conduct admission assessments and reassessments as indicated according to policy, procedures and standards of care.

• Follow admission and discharge procedures.

• Obtain and transcribe correctly the licensed independent practitioner’s LIP order.

• Utilize nursing judgement regarding PRN medication orders within the parameters of the LIP’s orders.

• Participate as a member of the interdisciplinary team.

• Document in the patient's record according to policy and procedure.

• Assist in the identification of patient and family educational needs.

• Participate in the teaching of patient and family educational needs especially related to physical issues.

• Formulate a daily shift assignment according to each staff's ability to care for the patient.

• Ensure appropriate staffing needs for all shifts.

• Supervise Mental Health Technicians in collaboration with the Executive Director of Nursing Services and/or IPU Supervisor.

• Provide daily information at shift change and treatment review/discharge meetings.

• Participate in CQI activities as assigned.

• Plan and lead educational groups related to patient’s treatment issues.

• Implement crisis intervention techniques when dealing with emergency situations

• Provides crisis assessments under the supervision of the on-call psychiatrist.

• Serve as a resource to Hamilton Center staff and community regarding available services, referral sources, emergency detention procedures, etc.

• Participate in cross-training as assigned.

• Keep supervisor informed of potential crisis situations.

• Maintains basic computer skills and knowledge in order to access client information and/or update information.

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Assure the pursuance of the principles of customer relations, total quality management, and teamwork.

• Maintain confidentiality in accordance with established policy and procedures.

• Maintain professional staff membership.

• Participate in unit staff meetings and continuing education activities to continually update current knowledge regarding nursing in general and psychiatric nursing in particular. 

• Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications/Requirements

• Associate or Bachelor level Nursing degree

• Knowledge and skills in the following areas: nursing care, psychiatric illnesses, dynamics of interpersonal relationships, nursing process, physical and psychological assessment skills, treatment planning, case management, basic pharmacology, administration of medication, operation of routine medical equipment, crisis intervention techniques and emergency care.

• Good written and verbal skills, record keeping, time management and interviewing skills.

• Good interpersonal skills, communication skills, and the ability to function as a team member.

Certificates, Licenses, Registration

• Licensed by the State of Indiana as a Registered Nurse.

• Maintain current American Red Cross CPR/AED certifications.

• Maintain current CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) certification.

• Maintain TB screening certification.
