Position Overview

We are in search of a dedicated and compassionate Licensed Mental Health Counselor to join our esteemed team at First Hand Psychotherapy Center. This full-time remote position invites you to utilize your skills in a supportive and dynamic community health clinic environment focused on trauma recovery. Your primary role will be to provide specialized mental health care to clients who have been impacted by various forms of trauma, enabling them to rebuild their lives.

About the Organization

First Hand Psychotherapy Center is committed to delivering exceptional outpatient mental health services tailored to individuals who have experienced trauma. Located in Columbia, Maryland, our clinic specializes in treating conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), complex trauma, and dissociative disorders. We aim to create a safe, trusting environment where healing can occur. By integrating evidence-based practices with a trauma-informed care approach, we empower our clients on their recovery journey.

Work Environment

This role is entirely remote, offering you the flexibility to manage your schedule while ensuring that you meet the therapeutic needs of your clients. While our standard work hours are Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, some flexibility may be required to accommodate patient appointments and needs. Our technology-driven program utilizes electronic health record (EHR) systems to streamline documentation and improve patient care coordination.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct comprehensive trauma-informed assessments to thoroughly understand each patient's trauma history and identify the most effective treatment modalities for their needs.
  • Develop and implement individualized treatment plans that are centered on trauma recovery, resilience-building, and patient empowerment.
  • Utilize evidence-based therapeutic interventions, including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), to facilitate healing and positive outcomes.
  • Lead both individual and group therapy sessions aimed at helping patients process their trauma, cultivate coping strategies, and enhance their mental well-being.
  • Work collaboratively with psychiatrists and other mental health professionals to ensure that patients receive comprehensive, integrated care tailored to their specific situations.
  • Provide immediate crisis intervention support to patients facing trauma-related emergencies, ensuring their safety and well-being.
  • Educate patients and their families about trauma responses, effective coping mechanisms, and available resources for continued support.
  • Maintain precise and confidential documentation in accordance with ethical and legal standards, contributing to the clinic’s overall accountability and transparency.
  • Participate in case consultations and team meetings, engaging regularly in professional development activities to enhance your trauma-informed care skills.
  • Stay informed about the latest research and best practices in trauma therapy, applying this knowledge to improve patient care continuously.
Patient Population / Client Focus

Your work will primarily focus on clients affected by trauma, including those who suffer from PTSD, complex trauma, and dissociative disorders. Understanding the unique challenges faced by trauma survivors will be key to providing effective support and facilitating their healing journey. Your empathetic and competent approach will foster a safe environment where patients feel valued and understood.

Qualifications
  • Possession of a Master's or doctoral degree in Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, Mental Health Counseling, or Psychology from an accredited institution.
  • Current and valid licensure as an LCMFT, LMFT, LCPC, or LCSW-C in Maryland.
  • A minimum of two years of post-licensure experience in mental health counseling, particularly in trauma-focused environments.
  • In-depth knowledge of trauma-related disorders and evidence-based trauma-informed treatment modalities.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills demonstrating a compassionate, non-judgmental approach towards clients.
  • The ability to manage high-stress situations with calm and clarity, ensuring patient safety and support.
  • Experience using electronic health record (EHR) systems effectively to document and manage patient information.
  • A collaborative mindset with a willingness to work as part of a multidisciplinary team dedicated to improving mental health outcomes.
Preferred Experience

While a minimum of two years of related experience is required, preferred candidates will have experience delivering trauma-focused therapies and interventions. Previous work in community health settings and familiarity with integrating trauma-informed care into practice will be seen as advantageous. A strong understanding of contemporary issues related to trauma therapy will enhance your effectiveness in this role.
