Job Description – Dental Hygienist

Facility: Lawton Indian Hospital
Location: Lawton, Oklahoma

Duration- 13 weeks

Shift- 8x5

Position Summary:

Lawton Indian Hospital is seeking a compassionate and skilled Dental Hygienist to provide preventive oral healthcare services to patients of all ages. The Dental Hygienist works collaboratively with dentists and the dental team to promote oral health, prevent dental disease, provide patient education, and support comprehensive dental care while maintaining compliance with Indian Health Service (IHS), OSHA, CDC, and infection control standards.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform comprehensive oral assessments, dental screenings, and periodontal evaluations.
  • Obtain and review medical and dental histories to identify conditions that may affect dental treatment.
  • Perform dental prophylaxis, scaling, root planing, and periodontal maintenance procedures.
  • Remove plaque, calculus, and extrinsic stains using hand instruments and ultrasonic scalers.
  • Expose, process, and evaluate digital and conventional dental radiographs in accordance with safety standards.
  • Apply fluoride treatments, dental sealants, and other preventive therapies to reduce the risk of dental disease.
  • Educate patients on proper oral hygiene techniques, nutrition, tobacco cessation, and preventive dental care.
  • Assist in the prevention, recognition, and management of periodontal disease.
  • Record clinical findings and treatment provided in the electronic dental record accurately and timely.
  • Prepare treatment rooms, instruments, and dental materials while maintaining strict infection prevention and sterilization protocols.
  • Sterilize and maintain dental instruments and equipment according to CDC, OSHA, and IHS guidelines.
  • Monitor patients during dental procedures and report any changes in patient condition to the dentist.
  • Assist dentists during selected clinical procedures when required.
  • Participate in community oral health promotion, school-based dental education, and preventive health outreach programs.
  • Maintain adequate inventory of dental supplies and report equipment maintenance needs.
  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA, infection control, radiation safety, and quality assurance standards.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, continuing education, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Graduate of an accredited Dental Hygiene program.
  • Current, active Dental Hygienist license.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Experience in clinical dental hygiene preferred.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain all required facility credentials and privileges.

Must have BLS(AHA) License
