Job Description
Job Title: Painter and Drywall Finisher
Department: Construction Department
Reports To: Construction Superintendent
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Full Time
Revised Date: 8/11/26
Salary: $24.00/hour
POSITION FOCUS
Responsible for performing drywall repairs and painting of all Park District property and facilities.
SUPERVISORY RELATIONSHIPS
Reports to the Construction Superintendent and may supervise a crew as directed.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
  • Works directly with the Construction Superintendent to define scope of work, budget estimates, purchasing supplies and planning for each repair and project.
  • Assist the Construction Superintendent in providing a detailed list of materials and equipment required to complete each project.
  • Surface preparation by cleaning, sanding, patching and repairing walls, ceiling, furniture, and other surfaces to ensure a smooth, durable finish.
  • Apply paints, stains, varnishes, and other coatings using brushes, rollers, or spray equipment, ensuring even coverage and high-quality finishes.
  • Final clean-up of area after painting is completed.
  • Mix paints and finishes to achieve desired colors and textures and select appropriate materials for different surfaces.
  • Perform small maintenance tasks such as patching walls, replacing wood, or repairing damaged surfaces.
  • Responsible for tool maintenance and repairs of painting tools and equipment.
  • Follow safety protocols, wearing protective gear, and adhere to chemical handling, product storage and safety regulations.
  • Staff and team communication to ensure minimal disruptions to facility events and programs during painting and repair projects. Communicate timeline and schedule of projects with building and parks managers and staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
  • Proficiency in various painting techniques, surface preparation, and finishing methods. Experience and knowledge with epoxy floor systems and athletic court coating systems is a plus.
  • Previous experience in residential and commercial painting is preferred.
  • Attention to detail, time management, communication skills, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team is required.
  • Ability to occasionally work at heights, lift materials and perform repetitive tasks safety.
  • Work environment includes outdoor projects in varying weather conditions as well as interior work in conditioned and unconditioned spaces.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
  • High school graduate or G.E.D.
  • Minimum of three to four years' experience in painting and coating projects.
  • CPR and First Aid Certification preferred.

HOURS
  • 40 hours a week, Monday through Friday 7:30 to 4:00
  • Night, weekend and holiday scheduling may be required
  • Employees are on duty whenever the need exists

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS
  • General work area is outdoors and indoors
  • Frequent walking, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and reaching. Occasional sitting, balancing, crawling. Medium to heavy lifting of 50+ pounds
  • Exposure to chronic infectious diseases while performing routine first aid or emergency procedures
  • Protective clothing and equipment are required as it pertains to the job duty:
    • Ear plugs or ear covers
    • Safety goggles, glasses or face shield
    • Sturdy leather work boots with steel or composite toe (No sneakers/tennis shoes or sandals)
    • Long work pants or jeans
    • Protective gloves
    • Painting and spraying respirator
    • Back brace
    • Knee pads
    • Protective suit or outerwear
  • Exposure to chemicals such as cleaning solutions, solvents, petroleum products, etc.
