Job description

Job Summary:
An aluminum casting mold/tooling technician operates specialized machinery to disassemble, clean, reassemble and/or repair metal parts and components of casting molds and bottom blocks. This job involves preparing molds/tooling offline prior to being installed on casting table, installing on casting table and making any adjustments to casting molds/tooling based on ingot sizes to be cast. It is a hands-on, detail-oriented, and physically demanding role within a manufacturing or foundry environment.
Responsibilities:
  • Prepare molds, including bottom blocks, positioning based on ingot size to be cast, and ensuring proper alignment.
  • Inspect mold/tooling for defects such as cracks in graphite liners or incorrect water patterns, using precision instruments to verify that they meet specifications.
  • Assist in diagnosing and resolving issues with casting molds/tooling which affect the overall production process.
  • Perform routine and preventive maintenance on molds/tooling and mold shop equipment, including cleaning and lubricating machines, to minimize downtime.
  • Adhere to strict safety procedures and guidelines when working with molten metal and heavy machinery.
  • A strong understanding of how machines and tools work, including their repair and maintenance.
  • The ability to closely inspect products and processes to ensure quality and detect flaws.
  • Good troubleshooting skills to address issues with equipment or product quality.
  • The ability to interpret technical drawings and work orders to determine specifications.
  • Lead or assist in the installation and commissioning of new machinery and systems, ensuring proper setup and integration with existing infrastructure.
  • Provide technical guidance, expertise, and on-the-job training to new Maintenance Technicians. Serve as a subject matter expert during complex repair scenarios.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed maintenance logs and work orders within a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS). Document repair actions, irregularities, and ongoing maintenance needs.
  • The ability to work collaboratively with other production and maintenance teams.
  • Enforce and adhere to all foundry-specific safety protocols, including those for molten metal handling, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), and personal protective equipment (PPE) in high-temperature environments.

Qualifications:
  • A minimum of 5-7 years of related machinist experience in industrial manufacturing.
  • High school diploma or GED is required. An associate degree or vocational training for an industrial machinist preferred.
  • Expertise in reading and interpreting electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, blueprints, and technical manuals.
  • Proficiency with a variety of hand, power, and diagnostic tools.
  • Strong problem-solving and root cause analysis abilities.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Use power saws, drills, hammers, presses and grinders, ovens, dip tanks, dynamic balancer, gas and electric welding and cutting equipment, dial indicators, rules, tapes, micrometers, squares, levels, flow and pressure meters, lubricating equipment, handling equipment such as jacks, hoists, cranes and trucks; hand and powered cleaning tools; hand tools common to the trade and P.C.
  • Must be willing to work a rotating schedule that includes nights, weekends and holidays
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds repeatedly
