General Description
This is a supervisory position in the Division of Equipment Services, Department of Environmental Services. Incumbents in this class perform a wide variety of supervisory functions within the scope of the operations of the Central Vehicle Maintenance Facility. General supervision is received from a higher level manager. Performs related work as required.

CITY RESIDENCY WILL BE REQUIRED WITHIN ONE YEAR OF HIRE.
Typical Work Activities
  • Supervises, schedules, and assigns work to all levels of automotive and equipment maintenance and repairpersonnel;
  • Coordinates the scheduling and assignment of fleet vehicles and monitors outgoing and incoming vehicles;
  • Oversees repair work that is sublet to outside vendors;
  • Reviews and compares work performance and/or products of subordinate staff with established standards to determine employee production levels and training needs;
  • Provides assistance to repair personnel in the diagnosing of repair work;
  • Administers the preventative maintenance program;
  • Monitors employee performance , time, and attendance records and when necessary administers disciplinary procedures in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement;
  • Reviews work order billing for accuracy;
  • Implements and enforces safety policies through regular inspection of facilities and equipment;
  • Trains and counsels subordinates in procedures, policies and in safety practices and meets regularly with them to discuss concerns;
  • Writes brief narrative reports and memos;
  • Operates heavy equipment or vehicles on an as needed basis.

Minimum Qualifications
High School diploma or GED PLUS
I. Associates' degree in Automotive Technology or related field AND one (1) year experience supervising mechanics in the repair and maintenance of heavy equipment or automotive equipment, which must have included heavy duty diesel equipment and hydraulic systems. Experience must have involved the supervision of at least five (5) mechanics.
OR
II. Certification as an ASE Master Automotive Technician or Master Medium/Heavy Truck Technician AND one (1) year of experience as described in I.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid New York State Class D operators license at time of appointment. Incumbents must maintain this license throughout their employment in this title.
Possession of a New York State Class B Commercial Drivers license with air brake endorsement within 6 months of appointment. Incumbents must maintain this license throughout their employment in this title.
Possession of a N.Y.S. Motor Vehicle Inspector's License (Group 1 and 2) within three (3) months of appointment. This licensure must be maintained through employment in this title.
