Job description

The ASR Group family of companies make up the world's largest refiner and marketer of cane sugar. The companies produce a full line of grocery, industrial, foodservice and specialty sweetener products. In Europe, ASR Group companies operate sugar refineries in the United Kingdom, Portugal, and, with a joint venture partner, Italy. The companies also farm sugarcane and own sugar mills in Mexico and Belize. The ASR Group portfolio includes the leading brands Domino, C&H, Florida Crystals, Redpath, Tate & Lyle, Lyle's, Sidul and Whitworths.  ASR Group companies also produce and market Tellus, a single-use, compostable tableware and foodservice product made from plant fibers, including sugarcane.

OVERVIEW

The Safety Supervisor is responsible for supporting the safety and health processes within the local organization. This individual will assist the safety manager in leading the safety and health efforts within the plant, which includes the implementation and maintenance of a safety management system. The position of Safety Specialist reports directly to the Safety Manager and has the responsibility to assist in the implementation and evaluation of critical safety processes, programs, and procedures to achieve goals, objectives, and continuous improvement related to compliance as well as injury reduction.

ESSENTIAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree in Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field from an accredited university or college.
  • Associate degree in a related field preferred; candidates with four or more years of relevant professional experience will also be considered.

DETAILED ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Act as primary backup for the EHS Manager in their absence. 
  • Monitor and maintain compliance with the requirements of federal & state OSHA requirements and applicable consensus standards.
  • Provide direct support in the developing and implementing facility policies and practices as part of our efforts to achieve ISO 45001 certification
  • Provide relevant content and subject matter expertise to support:
    • Creation and delivery of safety related training
    • Effective implementation of compliance and safety management system programs
    • Facility assessments for the reduction of hazards and prevention of accidents
  • Assist in creating and provide support as requested to achieve annual plant safety goals. 
  • Work in a team environment to continuously improve performance related injury/illness prevention, compliance assurance, safety auditing, incident investigation, and employee training.  
  • Work with the management team and employees to improve a culture of safety awareness and responsibility across the organization.
  • Assist with employee engagement efforts including oversight of safety committees and the company's behavioral assessment process.
  • Serve as an active member of the Corporate Safety Network Committee.   Occasionally travel to other company locations as a member of an assessment team or to serve as a subject matter expert regarding resolution of a particular issue.
  • Assist with workers compensation management and the return-to-work program.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

  • 2 to 4 years of occupational safety and health experience in industrial operations.
  • Knowledgeable of federal, state, and local regulations as well as relevant consensus standards (e.g., ANSI, NFPA). 
  • Knowledge of Behavioral Safety Auditing techniques.
  • Incident Investigation and Root Cause Analysis education or experience.  
  • Ability to coach and train employees.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (to include but not limited to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Strong organization skills, including attention to detail, ability to multi-task, and prioritize projects.
  • Interpersonal skills with the ability to resolve conflict and reach agreement with others.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to analyze data, draw conclusions, and make recommendations.
  • Proactive, highly organized and committed to continuous improvement.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters.
  • Excellent communication skills with all stakeholders and audiences.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (PPT, Excel, Word).

LOCATION OF ROLE

  •  Baltimore

TRAVEL

  • Travel will be infrequent and based on the needs of the business (likely less than 5% annually)

SALARY PAY RANGE: $62,500 - $115,500 plus bonus

The pay rate for the successful candidate will depend on the candidate's qualifications and prior experience. 

Benefits include healthcare (medical, dental, vision, prescription drugs) available the first of the month following 30 days of employment, 401(k) with match, life insurance, AD&D, short-term disability, vacation, holiday and sick time.
