Job Summary

The Engineer reports to the Manager Engineering, Capital Delivery within the Clearance, Inspections, and Testing group. Assist the team with day-to-day operations. Perform troubleshooting and maintenance of the Wheel Load Impact Detectors (WILDs) as well as other select wayside instrumentation systems. Perform data analytics to check health of systems, evaluate the data captured on rolling stock to assist mechanical stakeholders. Assist with the introduction, testing, and commissioning of new technologies and support various other projects relevant to the track geometry group. This position will require travel as necessary (up to 50% of the time) and may involve extensive night work and multiple day stays away from headquarters. 

Essential Functions

    Troubleshoot and repair WILDs, including on-track gauges and wayside electronic components. 

    Troubleshoot and repair RailBAM acoustic monitoring site and KLD WheelScanner system.

    Collaborate with Mechanical stakeholders regarding rolling stock performance and evaluate quality of alerts generating work orders.

    Perform daily health checks of various wayside systems to ensure site operation and integrity of the data produced, analyze data to drive maintenance and improve quality.

    Utilize knowledge gained on wayside detector data to develop detector health, rolling stock / fleet condition, and other analysis.

    Remotely monitor systems for failures and be prepared to react via remote troubleshooting or site visit.
    Collect and analyze wheel and rail profile data as needed for ride quality, system QA/QC, VTI analysis.

    Assist vendors with periodic site calibrations.

    Improve and develop new reporting techniques for monthly statistics and yearly tonnage reports.

    Assist Manager Engineering with various project work.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree requires or equivalent combination of training, education and relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree. Plus,
  • 3 years of prior experience required

Preferred Qualifications
  • 5+ years of relevant experience preferred
  • BS / AS in Computer Science or Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering
  • Data analytics experience
  • Experience with hand tools and working on mechanical systems
  • Experience with strain gauges and/or troubleshooting of electrical systems
  • Qualification in Roadway Worker Protection, AMT-2, Blue Flag Protection, MW1000, and the periodic maintenance of these qualifications. If not qualified, the candidate must have the capability and desire to become qualified.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite of tools (or equivalent)
  • Experience with, or the ability to learn and understand the use of, software such as MATLAB, Power BI, Bentley AssetWise, and ArcGIS.
  • Must be able to interface with all levels of employees and both external and internal customers
  • Demonstrated effective communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Demonstrates leadership by taking initiative and requires minimal supervision of daily tasks

Environmental Conditions/Physical Demands

The salary/hourly range is $86,500.00 - $111,996.00. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. Depending on an employee's assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee's base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position.
