Advanced Energy Jobs Information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Manufacturing Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Manufacturing Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, process optimization, and quality control, typically supported by a degree in mechanical, industrial, or manufacturing engineering. Familiarity with CAD software, Six Sigma or Lean Manufacturing certifications, and experience with automation systems are commonly required. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help you effectively collaborate and drive continuous improvement. These abilities ensure efficient production processes, cost reduction, and high product quality in a competitive manufacturing environment.

What are some common challenges a Manufacturing Engineer faces in optimizing production processes?

Manufacturing Engineers often encounter challenges such as balancing efficiency with product quality, minimizing production costs while maintaining safety standards, and implementing new technologies without disrupting existing workflows. They may also need to troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and coordinate with cross-functional teams, such as quality assurance and maintenance, to resolve issues quickly. Staying up-to-date with industry advancements and continuous improvement methodologies like Lean or Six Sigma is essential to overcoming these challenges and driving process enhancements.

What are Manufacturing Engineers?

Manufacturing Engineers are professionals who design, implement, and improve manufacturing processes in factories and production plants. They focus on increasing efficiency, reducing waste, and ensuring that products are made safely and cost-effectively. Their work often involves collaborating with other engineers, quality control teams, and production staff to optimize workflows and integrate new technologies into manufacturing systems.

What is the difference between Manufacturing Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectManufacturing EngineerMechanical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Manufacturing, Industrial, or Mechanical Engineering; certifications like CMfgEBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering; Professional Engineer (PE) license often preferred
Work EnvironmentFactories, production plants, manufacturing facilitiesDesign offices, research labs, manufacturing settings
Industry UsageManufacturing, production, industrial sectorsAutomotive, aerospace, energy, product design

Manufacturing Engineers focus on optimizing production processes and workflows within manufacturing environments, while Mechanical Engineers design and analyze mechanical systems. Both roles require engineering degrees, but Manufacturing Engineers are more involved in process improvement and production efficiency, whereas Mechanical Engineers often work on product design and mechanical system development.

Being part of a nimble company with a solid foundation attracts team members that are capable, driven and like a challenge. Our employees collaborate and know how to have fun inventing, working, building and winning together. At our core, we are Advanced Energy - powering the future, together.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Advanced Energy, RF Delivery Systems (RFDS) is looking for an experienced and proven Lead Engineer - Metrology for its New Product Development (NPD) team to lead the Metrology Systems used in Plasma Power applications.

The Lead Engineer - Metrology will have responsibility of architecting, validating, and scaling highfidelity RF and pulsed DC metrology for factory deployment. You will drive the endtoend lifecycle of metrology solutions: sensor design & selection, calibration strategies, uncertainty modeling, procedures, MSA, SPC integration, and factoryscale rollout. This role is technical and handson, with significant crossfunctional influence (R&D, RF design, process engineering, manufacturing, and factory automation. The successful candidate will have technical skills to understand the product and customer requirements, as well as detailed knowledge of the appropriate metrology standards and methods of traceability to apply in each situation. Ability to communicate uncertainty calculations and traceability methods to internal and external stakeholders, including accrediting bodies, is expected. The Lead Engineer - Metrology will be responsible for ensuring test methods and procedures support high levels of integrity while maintaining product manufacturability. Prior experience in industrial RF power and/or high-power power supply design is preferred.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Build rigorous uncertainty budgets (per GUM/JCGM 100) for parameters relevant to complex, high power industrial electronics.

Lead sensor/systems metrology with a cross-functional team: specify, develop, or qualify sensors (e.g., directional couplers, VI probes, calorimetric power); define deembedding and Sparameter workflows.

Establish traceability to national standards (e.g., NIST) and design decision rules/guardbanding for production dispositions (e.g., ILAC/ISO/IEC 17025 aligned).

Operationalize metrology for HVM: author SOPs/MOPs, MSA/GR&R plans, SPC hooks, calibration intervals, and lifecycle management for sensors and fixtures.

Validate robustness under real tool conditions: thermal drift, nonlinearity, electromagnetic coupling, noisy loads, parasitics, and match network dynamics; define tool matching and metrology equivalence criteria.

Conduct design reviews, coach on uncertainty/statistics, and set technical standards.

Partner with RF design, applications/process engineering, reliability, and quality to ensure metrology integrity from R&D through HVM.

Communicate clearly to all stakeholders: quantify metrology risk/impact with KPIs (e.g., GR&R, Cg/Cgk, Cpk, escape rate, uptime/yield/cost impacts).

Enhance and align metrology programs at relevant business sites. Prepare metrology plans for both initial accreditation and ongoing re-accreditation by third-party organizations like A2LA.

Understand how industry trends and technical requirements can be integrated into AE's metrology strategy.

Create visibility and credibility for AE in metrology forums and with key customers.

Serve as a consultant to peer groups within AE in support of new product development. Work with our Advanced Development team to review technology readiness to launch into new products.
