This role requires knowledge of material properties, load calculations, and advanced design techniques to maximize the efficiency and durability of wood-based structures.

What does a timber engineer do?

Timber Engineers are responsible for designing, analyzing, and specifying timber structures such as buildings, bridges, or frameworks, often collaborating closely with architects, contractors, and other engineers. Their day-to-day work may include preparing detailed drawings, conducting structural calculations, selecting suitable wood materials, and ensuring all designs comply with relevant codes and standards. They also visit sites to inspect project progress and address technical challenges that may arise during construction. This variety makes each day dynamic and allows for the direct application of problem-solving skills and creativity in real-world projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a timber engineer?

To excel in Timber Engineering, you need a solid background in structural engineering, materials science, and design, usually supported by a degree in civil or structural engineering and relevant professional registration.
