What is impact investing?

An Impact Investing job involves managing investments that generate both financial returns and positive social or environmental impact. Professionals in this field work for investment firms, foundations, or financial institutions, researching opportunities, conducting due diligence, and helping allocate capital to mission-driven businesses or projects. Roles can include investment analysts, portfolio managers, or impact measurement specialists. These jobs require a blend of financial expertise, industry knowledge, and a commitment to sustainable development.

What does an impact investing professional do?

Impact Investing professionals typically spend their days sourcing and evaluating potential investment opportunities, conducting due diligence, and measuring both financial performance and social or environmental impact. They work closely with portfolio companies to support growth and enhance impact, often collaborating with internal teams, external partners, and investors to ensure alignment on goals. Regular responsibilities also include preparing reports for stakeholders, monitoring sectors and trends, and attending meetings with impact-driven organizations. This dynamic role requires balancing traditional investment analysis with mission-driven strategic thinking.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed for impact investing?

To thrive in Impact Investing, you need a strong background in finance, investment analysis, and social/environmental impact measurement—often backed by degrees in finance, economics, business, or related fields. Familiarity with ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) frameworks, impact measurement tools like GIIRS or IRIS, and financial modeling platforms is highly valued, as are professional certifications such as the CFA or CAIA. Outstanding communication, relationship-building, and analytical thinking are essential soft skills, helping you collaborate effectively with stakeholders and evaluate multifaceted projects. These skills are crucial for ensuring investments achieve both financial returns and positive societal outcomes.
