What is a gender equality specialist?

A gender equality specialist is a professional who works to promote equal rights, opportunities, and treatment for people of all genders. They typically assess policies, develop programs, and provide training to eliminate gender-based discrimination and bias in workplaces, schools, and communities. Their work often involves research, advocacy, and collaboration with organizations to ensure gender perspectives are integrated into decision-making processes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a gender equality specialist?

To thrive as a Gender Equality Specialist, you need expertise in gender studies, policy analysis, and program development, often supported by a degree in social sciences or related fields. Familiarity with data analysis tools, monitoring and evaluation systems, and international frameworks such as CEDAW is typically required. Strong communication, cultural sensitivity, and advocacy skills help build partnerships and drive organizational change. These competencies are vital for advancing equitable policies and fostering inclusive environments in diverse settings.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in gender equality roles within organizations?

Professionals in gender equality roles often encounter challenges such as addressing unconscious bias, navigating organizational resistance to change, and ensuring that diversity initiatives are meaningfully integrated rather than tokenistic. They also frequently work to balance strategic planning with day-to-day advocacy and may need to collaborate across departments to drive policy changes. Building trust, fostering open communication, and demonstrating the business value of gender equality are key to overcoming these challenges and creating lasting impact.

How can you make a difference?
UNICEF is currently implementing its Gender Equality Action Plan (GEAP) 2026-2029, which is an ambitious effort at catalysing field level programming and results that advance gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls in key areas of UNICEF's work. The GEAP programmatic framework works towards (i) achieving positive change for adolescent girls, with adolescent girls, and (ii) integrating priorities for gender equality and the empowerment of all girls and women in policies, budgets, systems and at-scale programmes. In addition, the GEAP identifies a set of institutional strengthening results to make UNICEF a more gender-responsive organization. Together, these approaches strengthen UNICEF's gender equality results which are prominent in all five goals of the Strategic Plan.
The Gender Equality Section is seeking a Consultant to support the compilation and drafting of key written products fulfilling institutional and interagency reporting obligations. The first is the report on the UN System-Wide Action Plan which tracks UN entities performance on gender equality for the Chief Executives Board for Coordination. The second is the Annual Report on progress on the Gender Equality Action Plan submitted to the UNICEF Executive Board alongside the Executive Director's Annual Report. The third is the Global Annual Results Report meant principally for donors, partners and the general public. The reports are targeted towards diverse audiences and require extensive compilation of content from various sources into high-quality products with strictly defined formats and tight timelines requiring rapid turnaround.
