Position Overview

The Steward at Hickory plays a vital role in maintaining the cleanliness, organization, and sanitation of the kitchen and support areas. This position ensures that dishes, utensils, and equipment are properly cleaned and available for use, while also assisting with bulk food preparation and storage tasks. With at least 6 months of dishwashing or stewarding experience, this role is ideal for someone with strong attention to detail and a commitment to supporting a high-functioning culinary team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate dishwashing equipment and perform manual cleaning to wash and sanitize dishes, glassware, flatware, pots, and pans.
  • Organize, dry, and store clean kitchenware and utensils in designated areas for efficient access.
  • Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of kitchen areas, including work surfaces, sinks, stovetops, and equipment.
  • Assist with bulk food preparation tasks such as washing, peeling, portioning, and labeling ingredients as directed by chefs.
  • Support receiving and storage of deliveries by rotating stock, labeling items, and maintaining organized storage areas.
  • Remove trash and recyclables promptly, ensuring proper disposal and adherence to sanitation standards.
  • Conduct end-of-shift cleaning and deep cleaning tasks as assigned to maintain a safe and hygienic environment.
  • Monitor dishwashing equipment and cleaning tools, reporting any malfunctions or maintenance needs to supervisors.
  • Assist with restocking kitchen stations and maintaining inventory of cleaning and dish supplies.
  • Follow all food safety, sanitation, and safety protocols, including proper handling of cleaning chemicals and use of PPE.
  • Collaborate with chefs, cooks, and front-of-house staff to ensure a smooth and efficient service flow.
  • Contribute to a positive, team-oriented kitchen culture that supports Hickory’s standards of quality and hospitality.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum 6 months of dishwashing/steward experience in a restaurant or hospitality environment.
  • Strong work ethic, ability to follow instructions, and attention to detail in maintaining cleanliness.

Preferred:

  • Experience in a high-volume or fine dining establishment.
  • Familiarity with commercial dishwashing equipment and sanitation procedures.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Ability to work quickly and efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of basic sanitation and cleaning practices.
  • Physical stamina to stand for long shifts, lift heavy items (up to 40 lbs), and perform repetitive tasks.
  • Team-oriented mindset with effective communication skills.

Work Environment / Physical Requirements

  • Professional kitchen environment with exposure to heat, steam, water, and cleaning chemicals.
  • Requires frequent standing, bending, and lifting.
  • Must be able to safely handle cleaning agents and follow sanitation protocols.
