As of Aug 20, 2026, the average hourly pay for computational fluid dynamics in the United States is $59.66, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $48.08 and $69.23 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is computational fluid dynamics?

A Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) job involves using numerical analysis and algorithms to simulate and analyze fluid flow, heat transfer, and related physical phenomena. CFD professionals work in industries like aerospace, automotive, energy, and manufacturing to optimize designs, improve efficiency, and solve complex engineering problems. They use specialized software and high-performance computing to model real-world fluid interactions, validate theoretical data, and enhance product performance. Strong skills in mathematics, physics, and programming are essential for success in this field.

What does a typical day look like for someone working in computational fluid dynamics?

A typical day for a CFD Engineer involves setting up and running fluid dynamics simulations, analyzing complex data sets, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to optimize designs. You’ll often use specialized software to model physical phenomena, prepare technical reports, and present findings to stakeholders. Regular team meetings and project reviews are common, as are opportunities to refine simulation techniques based on experimental data and feedback. The work is dynamic and varied, providing a balance of independent analysis and collaborative problem solving.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in computational fluid dynamics, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Engineer, you need a strong background in fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and numerical methods, typically supported by an engineering or applied mathematics degree. Expertise in industry-standard CFD software such as ANSYS Fluent, OpenFOAM, or COMSOL Multiphysics, along with proficiency in programming languages like Python or MATLAB, is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help with analyzing results and collaborating across teams. These competencies enable accurate simulation of complex fluid systems, ensuring reliable results and smooth project execution.

Job Description

Analytical Mechanics Associates Inc. is currently seeking a Computational Fluid Dynamicist to join our onsite team at NASA Langley. Specifically, this position resides in the Computational Hypersonics, Aeroheating, Reentry, and Gridding Ensemble (CHARGE) which primarily supports the RSES contract at NASA Langley Research Center, Hampton, VA. CHARGE provides a state-of-the-art computational design, analysis, simulation, and optimization capability in support of NASA's high speed airbreathing full scale vehicle development, subscale flight demonstrators, and associated ground tests through the innovative and timely utilization of a range of commercial and internally developed software packages.

The salary range for this position is $95,000-$120,000 commensurate with education and experience.

Responsibilities include:

  • Performing three-dimensional numerical simulations of internal and external flows including multi-species finite rate chemistry and the accompanying grid generation
  • Developing engine and vehicle designs along with determining performance and operability for programs involving ramjet/scramjet propulsion utilizing a variety of methods from cycle to Navier-Stokes codes

Requirements:

  • MS degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering
  • 2 - 5 years of work experience
  • Experience with commercial/government grid generation packages (Pointwise, Heldenmesh, etc.) and flow solvers (VULCAN, Loci/CHEM, FUN3D, USM3D, OVERFLOW, CFD++, etc.)
  • Experience with data visualization software (TECPLOT, etc.)Background with CAD software is preferred
  • Background in the interpretation of high-speed wind tunnel testing is also desirable
  • Security Clearance will be needed - therefore, only US citizens can be considered
