What is a classic car?

A Classic Car job typically involves working with vintage or antique automobiles, focusing on restoration, maintenance, appraisal, or sales. Professionals in this field may restore classic cars to their original condition, perform mechanical repairs, or help buyers and collectors find rare models. Jobs can range from mechanics and bodywork specialists to historians and auctioneers. Passion for classic automobiles, attention to detail, and specialized knowledge of vintage car parts and engineering are essential for success in this field.

What are some of the most common challenges faced by classic car mechanics on the job?

Classic car mechanics often face challenges such as sourcing rare or discontinued parts, working with outdated technology, and addressing repairs that require custom fabrication or unique troubleshooting skills. Unlike modern vehicles, classic cars may not have extensive documentation or readily available computerized diagnostics, requiring a greater reliance on experience and hands-on knowledge. The work environment typically involves close collaboration with restoration teams, clients, and sometimes specialty parts suppliers. Adapting to each vehicle’s unique quirks and maintaining historical accuracy can make each project rewarding but complex. These challenges help develop valuable expertise and can also lead to exciting opportunities within the vintage automotive industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the classic car position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Classic Car Mechanic, you need a strong background in automotive repair, restoration techniques, and knowledge of vintage vehicle systems, typically supported by formal training or certification in automotive technology. Familiarity with specialized diagnostic tools, restoration equipment, and classic car documentation is important in this field. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and a passion for historical vehicles help professionals excel in this role. These skills ensure the quality and authenticity of restorations, as well as the safe and reliable performance of classic cars.

Kinnaman’s Hot Rods

Pay: $62,400 – $72,800 annually
Benefits: Health, Dental, Vision
Paid Time Off: 7 major holidays + sick and personal time

We specialize in restoration, customization, performance upgrades, and complete rebuilds of classic cars—and also servicing newer vehicles. This position is ideal for a technician who takes pride in craftsmanship, problem-solving, and doing things the right way.

Why You’ll Want This Job

  • Work on unique, high-end classic builds — not repetitive flat-rate work
  • Be part of a shop that values craftsmanship, precision, and pride in the work
  • Competitive, stable salary based on your experience and skill
  • Join a growing specialty shop with long-term opportunity

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Diagnose, repair, restore, and customize classic vehicles
  • Perform tune-ups, upgrades, and full engine rebuilds
  • Work with carbureted engines and older ignition systems
  • Diagnose and repair electrical systems (classic and modern)
  • Troubleshoot suspension, steering, braking, and drivetrain systems
  • Diagnose manual and automatic transmissions
  • Perform general repairs on newer vehicles as needed

What We’re Looking For

  • Strong, well-rounded automotive diagnostic ability
  • Proven experience with classic cars and carbureted engines
  • Solid understanding of automotive electrical systems
  • Experience with classic suspension, steering, and drivetrain systems
  • Ability to work independently and solve complex problems
