Type: Full Time
Location: Hybrid - Louisville, CO
Quantum Physicist, Neutral Atom Quantum Computing
Seeking self-motivated, collaborative, and technically strong individuals to help advance our quantum computing mission. We welcome applications from experimental physicists with expertise in Atomic, Molecular, and Optical (AMO) physics, particularly those with experience in the coherent control of quantum systems, including ultracold atoms, trapped ions, or diamond NV centers.
Responsibilities
  • Design, build, calibrate, and maintain neutral atom quantum computing systems.
  • Lead or contribute to research and development efforts involving laser systems, quantum processing units (QPUs), quantum gate protocols, and related quantum computing technologies.
  • Develop, test, and validate models of atomic and optical physics to support system design and engineering decisions.
  • Translate system-level requirements into detailed specifications and solutions for specialized engineering subsystems.
  • Independently drive research initiatives by defining requirements, evaluating solution approaches, and executing projects within established resource and timeline constraints.
  • Develop, test, troubleshoot, and maintain software used for experimental control, data acquisition, and system optimization.
  • Design, assemble, characterize, and validate optical and laser-based systems.
  • Own and improve subsystem performance, reliability, and operational availability.
  • Mentor junior team members and provide guidance to interns and early-career researchers.
Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD in Atomic Physics, Optical Physics, AMO Physics, or a related field, or equivalent industry experience.
  • 4+ years of relevant research or professional experience in experimental atomic or optical physics.
  • Experience working with laboratory equipment commonly used in atomic physics, including lasers, acousto-optic modulators (AOMs), RF signal generators and analyzers, and ultra-high vacuum (UHV) systems.
  • Experience developing software in Python for laboratory automation, experiment control, or data analysis.
  • Knowledge of atom-light interactions and the ability to perform calculations supporting laser system design and experimental requirements.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively across technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated collaboration skills and experience working in cross-functional, team-oriented environments.
  • Proven problem-solving abilities and a track record of learning and applying new concepts quickly.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction while also partnering effectively with colleagues and stakeholders.

Candidates with significantly more experience may be considered for a Senior Quantum Physicist level role.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience operating high-power continuous-wave (CW) lasers (>1 W) and/or short-wavelength visible lasers (<500>
  • Experience characterizing and mitigating laser frequency and intensity noise.
  • Experience with analog electronics, feedback control systems, and servo-loop stabilization techniques.
  • Experience with high numerical aperture (NA) imaging and optical projection systems.
  • Experience integrating complex, multi-disciplinary experimental subsystems.
  • Familiarity with Git, Linux environments, and command-line tools.
  • Demonstrated interest in staying current with advances in AMO physics and applying emerging research findings to practical system development.
