What is a young adult librarian?

Young adult librarians are library professionals who specialize in serving the needs of teenagers and young adults, typically ages 12 to 18. They curate book collections, plan programs and events, and provide research assistance tailored to this age group. Their role also involves promoting literacy, fostering a welcoming environment, and helping young adults develop information and digital literacy skills. Young adult librarians often collaborate with schools and community organizations to support youth development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a young adult librarian?

To thrive as a Young Adult Librarian, you need a master's degree in library science (MLS/MLIS), knowledge of young adult literature, and experience in youth services. Familiarity with library management systems, digital resources, and programming tools like Canva or social media platforms is also important.
