Yield Analysis Engineer information

What is a yield analysis engineer?

Yield Analysis Engineers are professionals who focus on analyzing and improving the manufacturing yield of products, particularly in industries like semiconductor fabrication. They collect and interpret process data to identify patterns, root causes of yield loss, and opportunities for process optimization. Their work helps companies maximize production efficiency and minimize defects, ultimately reducing costs and increasing profitability. Yield Analysis Engineers collaborate with cross-functional teams, including manufacturing, quality assurance, and process engineering, to implement solutions that improve yield.

How does a yield analysis engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to address manufacturing issues?

Yield Analysis Engineers regularly work alongside process engineers, product engineers, and quality assurance teams to identify and resolve manufacturing bottlenecks or defects. They analyze data from production lines, share findings with relevant teams, and participate in root cause analyses to implement corrective actions. This collaborative approach ensures that yield improvements are based on comprehensive insights and that solutions are effectively integrated into existing workflows. Strong communication and teamwork skills are essential in this role, as addressing yield challenges often requires input from multiple technical disciplines.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a yield analysis engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Yield Analysis Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, semiconductor manufacturing, and data analysis, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Experience with statistical analysis tools (like JMP or Minitab), data visualization software, and familiarity with yield management systems are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you identify issues and collaborate with cross-functional teams. These skills are crucial for optimizing manufacturing processes, reducing defects, and ensuring high product yield in a competitive semiconductor industry.

What is the difference between Yield Analysis Engineer vs Process Engineer?

AspectYield Analysis EngineerProcess Engineer
Primary FocusAnalyzing and improving manufacturing yields through data analysisDesigning, implementing, and optimizing manufacturing processes
Skills & CertificationsData analysis, statistical tools, engineering fundamentalsProcess design, engineering principles, certifications like Six Sigma
Work EnvironmentManufacturing plants, R&D labs, data analysis teamsProduction floors, process development departments

While both roles are integral to manufacturing, Yield Analysis Engineers focus on analyzing yield data to identify issues and improve output, whereas Process Engineers develop and optimize manufacturing processes. Both roles require strong analytical skills and engineering knowledge, often working closely to enhance production efficiency.

How much does a yield analysis engineer make?

A yield analysis engineer typically earns between $70,000 and $120,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced engineers with specialized skills or certifications can earn higher salaries. The role often requires knowledge of semiconductor manufacturing processes and data analysis tools.

Summary

We are seeking a talented and highly motivated Manufacturing Engineer with a proven track record of implementing best-in-class processes within a complex manufacturing environment. This role will report to the Engineering Manager and is an integral member of the Engineering team. You will work cross-functionally to implement manufacturing improvements and drive data-driven root cause solutions to technical problems. The ideal candidate takes pride in his/her work, analytical ability, organizational skills, and attention to detail. He/She appreciates an environment where superior work is encouraged, noticed, and rewarded and where individuals carry tremendous responsibility.

Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for ensuring manufacturing lines meet uptime, availability, and reliability metrics – OEE, capacity, cycle time, quality, and first-pass yield.
  • Continuously improve reliability metrics and utilize these metrics to recommend innovative solutions based on data-driven analyses.
  • Own individual workstations, tools, and production lines, and present periodic updates to management on the health of the owned areas.
  • Apply Design for X (DfX) principles to propose improvements of legacy products and during the new product introduction (NPI) process.
  • Design tooling, fixtures, and automated systems to manufacture products at the lowest cost and shortest cycle time.
  • Qualify production processes based on dimensional data, control plans, and PFMEAs.
  • Ability to program parts for production on Mazak and Tsugami equipment using Solid Cam and MasterCam Software.
  • Work with suppliers and customers to understand the root cause of failures, propose process and design changes, and implement and validate proposed modifications.
  • Develop and deliver training to operations and maintenance technicians to ensure the seamless handover of new equipment.
  • Train production teams on new processes and techniques.Collaborate with all cross-functional team members to understand challenges and utilize feedback supported by data to improve manufacturing operations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in manufacturing, industrial, mechanical, electrical engineering, or related technical degree (ABET-accredited engineering degree preferred).
  • Minimum five (5) years manufacturing and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong understanding of statistics.
  • Experience with improving quality and cost in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with Tableau, Minitab, SQL, and SolidWorks (or similar CAD software) desired.
  • Prior CNC or manual machining experience beneficial.
  • Able to manage multiple priorities simultaneously in a fast-paced environment, occasionally requiring extended hours.
  • Occasional domestic and international travel required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Engineering or Business Master's Degree (MBA).
  • Six Sigma Black Belt (preferably awarded from a world-class manufacturing organization).
  • Experience with automating production processes.
  • Experience in lean manufacturing implementation.
  • Experience with CNC machining, assembly processes, and/or distribution and logistics is beneficial.
  • Experience with Fanuc and Mazatrol controls.
