Job description

Overview

You've probably tried the other side of this industry. The prospecting, the cold calls, the pressure to eat what you kill. And somewhere along the way, you realized that what you actually love is the client relationship itself. The meeting. The follow-through. Making someone feel genuinely cared for.

If that sounds like you, keep reading.

A growing independent wealth management firm in Richmond is looking for a Director of Wealth Services to own the client experience for their individual wealth book. This is a service role, not a sales role. You will not be asked to build a book of business or hunt for new clients. What you will be asked to do is run a tight, high-touch client service operation for about 175 households and free up the lead advisor to focus on what he does best.

The firm manages close to a billion dollars across two divisions. You will be focused entirely on the individual wealth side, roughly $300 million, and you will lead a small pod that includes a paraplanner, a client service manager, and a client service specialist. These are tenured people. They know their jobs. They need someone in the middle who can make sure everything gets done and clients feel taken care of.

The Role

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading the weekly planning meeting every Monday, briefing the team on upcoming client cases including agendas, prior meeting recaps, recommended changes, supporting reports, and next steps
  • Opening and closing client meetings Tuesday through Thursday, handling administrative items like beneficiary updates and scheduling, taking notes, and ensuring clients feel genuinely cared for throughout
  • Producing executive summaries after each meeting and delegating action items to the appropriate team members
  • Responding to all client communication within 24 hours and maintaining accurate CRM records
  • Keeping client tier classifications current and proactively flagging anything that needs attention
  • Using Fridays for cleanup, prep, and setting the following week up for success
  • Over time, developing a client appreciation program and adding light referral support to meetings
What Success Looks Like

Success in this role means clients feel like the most important people in the world every time they interact with this firm. It means the lead advisor can walk into a meeting fully prepared without having to worry about the details and walk out knowing everything will be handled. It means the team runs smoothly, action items get done, and nothing falls through the cracks.

The right person will own this role fully. They will come to the lead advisor with options, not problems, and will build the kind of client trust that keeps relationships strong for years.

Requirements

Who You Are

You have worked on the service side of a financial advisory or wealth management firm and you know the rhythms of the work. You understand how to prepare for a client meeting, what happens after one, and how to communicate with clients who expect a high level of professionalism and care.

You will thrive here if you:

  • Bring solutions, not problems, and make decisions with confidence
  • Stay calm and organized when the week gets full
  • Genuinely enjoy the relationship side of this work and make clients feel valued
  • Run independently without needing to be managed

This is not the right role if you are looking to eventually go independent, build your own book, or use this as a stepping stone to partnership.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Financial services experience at a financial advisory, RIA or wealth management firm with real working knowledge of wealth management operations
  • Strong written communication skills; you will produce executive summaries and client correspondence regularly
  • High emotional intelligence; clients at this level expect to feel like the most important person in the room
  • Professionalism and warmth in equal measure
  • Comfortable running independently in a fast-moving environment

Strongly preferred:

  • eMoney experience
  • Experience with SmartOffice, Vanilla, Holistiplan, or YCharts
  • Series 65, Series 7, or other financial services licensing
  • Comfort with AI tools; the firm actively uses AI for meeting notes and summaries

Benefits

What You Get
  • Salary: $80K - $98K plus an annual performance bonus (eligible after your first year).
  • 15 days PTO per year to start, with accrual tied to tenure
  • 12 paid holidays
  • Medical coverage through United Healthcare; dental, vision, and supplemental options also available (employee-paid premiums)
  • Basic life insurance and short-term disability covered by the firm
  • 401(k) with matching
  • Full-time, in-office | Richmond, VA | Monday through Thursday 8 AM to 5 PM, Friday 8 AM to 4 PM
To Apply

Please submit your resume along with a brief letter introducing yourself and your interest in the role.
