Job description

Yards Brewing Company has been proudly brewing in the City of Brotherly Love since 1994. We have grown from a garage-sized operation to our newest location - a 70,000 square foot state-of-the-art brewery and taproom - at 500 Spring Garden Street. Philadelphia Pale Ale, Yards Signature IPA and Brawler, all nationally recognized ales, lead a balanced portfolio of quality, handcrafted beers including several seasonal and limited releases, along with our First Draft innovation series. About the Role:

The Brewer I supports brewing and cellaring operations in a high-volume production brewery. This role focuses on hands-on brewing tasks, cleaning and sanitation, and supporting daily production under the guidance of senior brewing staff. This is a development role designed to build foundational brewing, process, and operational skills with a path toward advancement.

Core Responsibilities:

Brewing & Cellaring Support

  • Assist with wort transfers, tank operations, and yeast handling
  • Support carbonation and basic tank management (FVs and BBTs)
  • Take gravities and assist with in-process checks
  • Support filtration and preparation for packaging

CIP, Cleaning & Sanitation

  • Execute CIP cycles for:
    • Fermentation Vessels (FVs)
    • Bright Beer Tanks (BBTs)
  • Perform manual cleaning (COP) of tanks, equipment, floors, and drains
  • Safely handle cleaning chemicals and follow sanitation procedures
  • Maintain a clean and organized brewhouse environment

Production Support & Coordination

  • Support daily brewing operations based on production schedule
  • Coordinate tasks with Brewing, Packaging, and Warehouse teams
  • Assist in prioritizing tasks to meet production needs

Quality, SOPs & Documentation

  • Follow all brewing SOPs and work instructions
  • Record basic production data accurately
  • Communicate any out-of-spec conditions to senior team members

Learning & Development

  • Develop understanding of brewing processes and systems
  • Gain exposure to automated brewhouse systems (Siemens Braumat)
  • Build troubleshooting and process awareness skills over time

Experience & Skills:

  • 1-2+ years of experience in brewing, manufacturing, or production environment
  • Basic understanding of brewing and willingness to learn
  • Strong work ethic and ability to perform physical tasks
  • Commitment to safety and cleanliness

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification in Brewing or related field
  • Experience with wine tasting and production
  • Knowledge of craft beer trends and industry developments
  • Forklift and/or scissor lift certification (or ability to obtain)

Work Style & Capability

  • Ability to follow SOPs and take direction from senior staff
  • Willingness to learn and develop new skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
  • Basic computer skills for data entry

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift 55+ lbs repeatedly
  • Ability to work in hot, cold, wet environments
  • Frequent standing, bending, climbing, and hose handling

Work Schedule & Availability

  • This is a full-time, production-based role supporting a multi-shift brewing operation
  • Standard schedule: 8-hour shifts, Monday through Friday, with the possibility of weekends and overnight shifts.
  • Schedules (including overnights) may vary based on production needs, including 10-hour shifts.
  • Start times may vary based on production requirements (including early mornings)
  • Flexibility is required to support:
    • Overtime as needed based on production demands
    • Occasional schedule adjustments to support brewing and packaging operations
