Job description


Summary:  Performs physical tasks involving the movement, storing, and maintenance of lumber and building materials as well as performing customer service and general yard maintenance.

 Essential Duties and Responsibilities to include but not limited to:

  • Offers prompt and courteous service to customers by offering assistance and filling orders as shown on their paid invoice.  This includes verifying type, quantity, and size of material purchased by customer.
  • Cuts stock to size required, using stationary power saw.  Records these actions on a “cut sheet” to reconcile stock records.
  • Advises Yard Forman or Inventory Control Specialist of low stock items.
  • Prepares material for delivery and assists Load Setter and Driver in loading delivery vehicle.
  • Accompanies driver to assist in off-loading at job site when directed by Yard Forman or Assistant Yard Foreman.
  • Prepares Return Material Authorization forms (RMA’s) as necessary to confirm type, quantity and size of material returned by customers.  This includes verifying the original purchase date and the acceptability of the items’ current condition.  Submits the RMA’s for approval.
  • Responsible for the tidiness and condition of an assigned section of storage area.
  • Handles material in a safe manner to avoid personal injury, damage to property and damage to product.  
  • Puts stock away as directed by supervisor.
  • Takes a proactive approach to keeping busy, finding tasks to complete during idle times without direction from a supervisor.
  • Stacks lumber neatly and safely, and ensure stacks are kept at even levels.
  • Picks up and disposes of stickers, strapping or any other garbage littering the yard area.
  • Sweeps and clears all areas of debris, etc.
  • Performs mowing, weed whacking and snow removal tasks
  • Informs supervisor of any problems with equipment or other safety concerns.

 As with all other jobs, other duties may be assigned.  Management reserves the right to reassign an individual in this position to another position in the interest of efficient personnel utilization.

 Education and / or Experience

High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma; or twelve months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to read and comprehend correspondence and memos.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and group situations to customers, associates, and venders.

 Mathematical Skills

Ability to apply basic algebra and geometry.

 Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to solve problems and deal with a variety of situations where only limited standardizations exist.
